Now on a run of games against high-calibre opposition in the Clausura 2023, Club América must react quickly if they’re to avoid seeing a decent campaign so far come apart at the seams.

Tuzos thump América at Azteca

With three Mexican ‘clásicos’ and a clash with the regular-season leaders still to come over the next month and a half, Las Águilas met defending champions Pachuca at the weekend - and were comprehensively beaten. Los Tuzos were out of sight at the break at the Estadio Azteca, as first-half goals by Javier López, Daniel Hernández and Roberto De la Rosa secured a 3-0 victory for the visitors.

Against Atlas in their previous game, América had already shown signs that all was not well when they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at the Estadio Jalisco.

Tigres up next... and it doesn’t get any easier

Saturday’s heavy defeat leaves Fernando Ortiz’s men sixth in the Clausura 2023 table, two points off the automatic postseason qualification spots.

Now, as they bid to get their tournament back on track, América face a demanding away assignment. They go to the Estadio Universitario, where they’ll take on second-placed Tigres - a side that look to be a serious contender to win the Clausura 2023.

Seven days after facing Tigres this Saturday, América visit the Estadio Akron to play Chivas Guadalajara in the latest edition of the Clásico Nacional, Mexico’s biggest club rivalry. Chivas, by the way, are currently on a four-game winning run.

And among their April fixtures, América must negotiate match-ups with Mexico City rivals Cruz Azul and Pumas - the Clásico Joven is on the 15th, the Clásico Capitolino on the 22nd - plus a meeting with the Clausura 2023′s current top dogs, Monterrey, on the 8th.

Los Azulcremas had enjoyed a favourable fixture list in the first half of the regular season, helping them to remain unbeaten in their first nine games of the tournament. But things just got a whole lot harder for the 13-time Mexican champions.
