After Manchester City’s win over Arsenal, who are odds makers favorites to win the Premier League title
Manchester City took a big step towards catching up to league leaders Arsenal on Sunday and now there looks to be a new favorite to lift the league title.
Momentum would certainly suggest that Manchester City are the favorites to win the Premier League title after their 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday. While the eye test does seem to favor Pep’s men, what do the odds makers say?
Are Gunners imploding?
Since October, Arsenal have looked far and wide the favorite to win the league title and snap the drought that has plagued them for over two decades. They have spent 265 days at the top of the table, but that could all change on Wednesday if City beat Burnley.
City would join Arsenal at the top of the table with 70 points through 33 matches, and would jump the Gunners for the top spot in the table heading into the final month of the season. It’s been a disastrous last month for Arsenal who lost the Carabao Cup final to City, got knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton, and now could lose their grip on the league after the loss at the Etihad.
Recent form would tell you that there is a fire that needs to be extinguished at the Emirates, but the odds makers are saying that it may already be too late for Mikel Arteta’s side. According to our friends at bet365.com City are yet to jump Arsenal in the table, but they have on the betting board. City’s odds have changed from 33/50 after the win yesterday while Arsenal have 6/5 odds.
Plenty still on the table
The match at the Etihad was a pendulum swinger, but that is not going to decide the Premier League title. City have six more matches, with visits to Everton and Bournemouth after their midweek trip to Burnley this week. They also have to host Brentford, Crystal Palace and finish off the season with a tough game against Aston Villa at the Etihad. They also have an FA Cup semifinal against Southampton this Saturday, which is an added game that could trip them up in their league run-in.
Arsenal have one game less on their PL schedule, which complicates things despite them currently hanging on to a three point lead over City. Add in a home and away match Champions League match against Atletico Madrid, and things really start to get interesting. The Gunners host Newcastle over the weekend before traveling to the Spanish capital for the first leg of the Champions League semifinal then return home for a match against Fulham. After their second leg against Atletico, they travel to West Ham, host Burnley and play Crystal Palace at the Emirates on the final day of the season.
It would be a monumental collapse for Mikel Arteta`s men if Arsenal were to squander yet another late lead in the league table. They have been close to winning it before, but never this close this late. Jamie Carragher wrote a column in the Telegraph saying, if they fail to win they would be “the most criticized runners-up in history.”
