Al Ahly vs Flamengo preview
Al Ahly looking for three in a row
Al Ahly have had to work harder than every other team left in the competition, as this will be their fourth match since arriving in Morocco. They comfortably dispatched New Zealanders Auckland City in the opening round and then sneaked past Seattle Sounders thanks to a late goal from Ashfa. They were, however, handed the tough task of taking on Real Madrid in the semi-finals and it proved to be a step too far, with the tournament favourites running out 4-1 winners. Al Ahly are, however, in familiar territory, as they have finished in third place in the last two FIFA Club World Cups.
Flamengo disappointment
Let’s be completely honest. This is not the game Flamengo were hoping to be competing in on Saturday. The Copa Libertdores holders headed into the competition as odds-on favourites to reach the final, only to suffer a surprise defeat to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in their only game so far in Morocco. Despite having an impressive array of talent on his roster, including a number of Brazilian internationals, things haven’t gone especially well for Portuguese coach Vitor Pereria since he took over from the successful Dorival Júnior, with Fla losing the Brazilian Super Cup to Palmeiras a couple of weeks ago. Other than European clubs, only teams from Brazil have ever won the FIFA Club World Cup but the best Flamengo can now hope for is finishing third and picking up those $2.5 million.
Al Ahly vs Flamengo : prediction
With the players that Flamengo have at their disposal, they are the favourites on paper to finish third. Soccer, as we know, however, isn’t played on paper and Pereira has so far struggled to replicate the success that Dorival Júnior enjoyed with Fla. Al Ahly have played a number of games in quick succession which could work against them although they’ll be confident of taking advantage of their opponents’ poor form.
Prediction: Al Ahly 1-2 Flamengo
