Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is close to a move to German champions Bayern Munich after Spurs accepted a bid worth more than £86 million.

Last season Kane became Tottenham’s all-time record goal scorer and he has now scored 280 goals in 435 appearances for the club. He also broke the England national team’s goal scoring record earlier this year, surpassing Wayne Rooney.

However his imminent departure from Spurs does mean that there is one record that he may not break; the Premier League all-time goal scoring record.

Kane has won the Premier League Golden Boot on three occasions - 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2020/21 - but remains 47 goals short of Alan Shearer’s Premier League record. In response to the news that Kane was close to a move to Bayern, Shearer joked that he would happily fly him to Germany in a bid to preserve his long-standing record.

If Kane stays in Germany for the duration of his four-year deal he will not return to the Premier League until the age of 34, at the earliest, by which point his chances of surpassing Shearer’s record will have faded.

What is the Premier League goal scorer record?

With 260 goals for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United Alan Shearer holds the record for the most goals in Premier League history and has remained at the top of the all-time standings since his retirement in 2006.

The likes of Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney and, most recently, Harry Kane have all threatened to surpass Shearer’s record, but none have managed to do so.

Kane’s imminent departure could see Shearer keep his lead at the top. Here’s the ten top goal scorers in the history of the Premier League:

1. Alan Shearer - 260

2. Harry Kane - 213

3. Wayne Rooney - 208

4. Andrew Cole - 187

5. Sergio Aguero - 184

6. Frank Lampard - 177

7. Thierry Henry - 175

8. Robbie Fowler - 163

9. Jermain Defoe - 162

10. Michael Owen - 150

As is often mentioned, these figures only count goals scorer in the English top flight since it was rebranded as the ‘Premier League’ in 1992. Shearer scored another 23 goals while playing in the old First Division, the precursor to the Premier League.

Shearer ranks fifth on the list of top goal scorers in the English top flight. Jimmy Greaves, with 357 goals in 516 games from 1957 to 1971, holds the distinction of being the record scorer in the top tier of English football.
