Alexia Putellas named as the best player in the world by IFFHS and The Guardian
The Barcelona midfielder has won the player of year award - again!
Despite not having played in the European Championship in England due to a torn cruciate ligament, Alexia Putellas has, for the second year in a row, been named the best player on the planet, this time by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS). She got the same award from UEFA, along with the Ballon d’Or. The Barcelona player has beaten German Lena Oberdorf in the ranking, who came second, but there was no competition in terms of the points awarded: Alexia stormed to first place with 105 points to Oberdorf’s 65.
Barcelona had the most representation on the list along with Wolfsburg, with two players. In addition to Alexia, Aitana also appears, in tenth. Mead, Renard, Popp, Kerr, Caicedo, Morgan and Hegerberg make up the rest of the top 10.
In addition, Alexia is also the best playmaker on the planet, behind Oberdorf. The German, at just 21 years old, is already regarded as one of the best players on the planet and has already been rubbing shoulders with the elite of world football for a few years. Tiane Endler has been named the best goalkeeper, as happened in 2021. The Chilean is on the list with Euro-winner Mary Earps and German Merle Frohms. Sandra Paños is ninth with only five points.
On the other hand, Sonia Bompastor is the best club coach on the planet for the IFFHS followed by the Spanish Jonatan Giráldez, while the European champion Sarina Wiegman is once again the best coach after winning this award previously in 2020. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg from Germany and Pia Sundhage from Brazil complete the podium in which there is no Spanish representation.
The Guardian also compiled a list of the top 100 female players in the world, and Alexia came top of that, too. She was followed by Beth Mead and Sam Kerr, with Aitana coming in fourth.
