This week América confirmed that it is the most successful club in Mexican soccer history by lifting the title for a record 14th time - beating Tigres 4-1 on aggregate over two legs. In his first tournament as team coach, André Jardine delivered the Apertura 2023, bringing to an end a five-year wait for the trophy.

Meanwhile players such as Álvaro Fidalgo, Diego Valdés, Julián Quiñones, Henry Martin and Alejandro Zendejas played a key role in the campaign, ensuring that the Águilas were able to bid a happy farewell to the Azteca before it closes for renovation work. With a squad full of great players, it was inevitable that some remembered the generation who won the previous title - the 2018 Apertura, a squad whose economic value exceeds the current one.

Squad values compared

According to the portal specialized in transfers and values of teams and players, Transfermarkt, the América squad during that period, directed by Miguel Piojo Herrera, had a value of 101.7 million euros compared to the 87.9 million euros which the current squad is worth. Five years ago, the most expensive player on the roster was Diego Lainez, with a value of 14 million euros - five million more than the most expensive player in the current squad: Julián Quiñones who is valued at 9 million euros.

In terms of results, both teams do not differ much. The 2018 América side finished the regular phase in second place in the table, with a notable production of 33 goals for and 17 against; Jardine’s Apertura 2023-winning team ended as leaders of the regular phase with 37 goals for and 14 against.
