América and Barcelona show support for Jenni Hermoso
Before the match at Estadio Azteca, a peaceful protest march against Rubiales was held, and the players held a banner.
Two hours prior to the kickoff of the friendly women’s soccer match in Mexico City between América and FC Barcelona, fans who attended the game at Estadio Azteca on Tuesday voiced their support for Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso.
Hermoso’s global support
Members of the Feminist Fan Group organized a peaceful march in protest of the non-consensual kiss received by the Pachuca footballer from Luis Rubiales. The fans, who are part of a group with one of its objectives being to promote enthusiasm for women’s football, chanted slogans such as “Rubiales Out,” “No More Room for Sexism,” “It’s Over,” and “Jenni, sister, your gang is here.”
The supporters displayed banners bearing the same phrases they chanted during their march. The Feminist Fan Group exclusively called upon women to participate in the demonstration “to show support for Jenni” and express their “discontent with Rubiales’ statements and the poor conditions in Spanish women’s football.”
Inside Estadio Azteca, the fans applauded when Hermoso’s name was announced over the stadium’s PA system, congratulating her on the title she secured with Spain in the Australia and New Zealand World Cup. The starting players from both Barcelona and América also supported Hermoso by posing before the match with a banner displaying the message #It’sOver and “You’re not alone!”
