Argentine goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín was one of the options América had in mind during the most recent transfer window. The club found themselves in need of a replacement when Guillermo Ochoa left to join Italian side Salernitana in January.

According to reports by TUDN, Marchesín, who is currently playing in Spain’s LaLiga with Celta Vigo, was very close to returning to América for a second spell. He made 106 appearances for Las Águilas between 2017 and August 2019 when he left for Europe, joining Porto.

Coach Fernando Ortíz had doubts about veteran keeper Óscar Jiménez and that led the board, headed by Santiago Baños, to look into recovering Marchesín. They felt he would be a better option as the Azulcremas’ first-choice, starting keeper for the Clausura 2023. According to media reports, it was the mistakes which Jiménez made during the pre-season that made Tano doubt whether he was the right choice to be the team’s starting goalkeeper.

With the arrival of Luis Malagón, who was signed from Necaxa, the idea was for Marchesín to be the starter and the Mexican his substitute. However, in the end, negotiations with Celta for Agustín did not bear fruit and Jiménez and Malagón remain as the two registered goalkeepers for the Clausura 2023.
