América and Chivas will play out a new episode of the Clásico Nacional this weekend as the Clausura 2023 enters Week 12. For the first time in a long while, both teams go into the game in excellent form, neck and neck in the table with just one point between them. This will be Fernando Ortíz’s third Clásico since he took charge of América a year ago.

Tano had only been in the job for just over a week when he experienced his first meeting with Guadalajara. In his second game in charge, the two teams played out a 0-0 draw at Akron Stadium on 13 March 2022.

Ortíz oversaw his second Clásico Nacional on matchday 15 of the Apertura 2022. This time he was able to celebrate with a win - Henry Martín and Alejandro Zendejas found the net as América won 2-1 at the Azteca.

Tano’s numbers in the other clásicos

To be precise, América have three clásicos in every tournament - because in addition to the Clásico Nacional, there is also the Clásico Joven (against Cruz Azul) and the Clásico Capitalino (against Pumas). Overall, Fernando Ortíz remains undefeated in all three Clásicos with a balance of three wins and two draws.

Added to the aforementioned victories over Chivas, Ortíz’s Águilas beat Pumas 0-3 in the Apertura 2022. Against Cruz Azul his side drew 0-0 and served La Máquina a 7-0 thrashing on 20 August last year.
