América overcome Cruz Azul in Azteca goal-fest
The Aguilas played for the bulk of the game against ten men and with the derby win have chalked up three wins in a row.
Despite late pressure, Club America hung on for the win after Uriel Antuna bagged a second for Cruz Azul in the 82nd minute which ensured a frantic and tense end to the ‘Clasico Joven’. In the end the two great goals from Paraguay’s Richard Sánchez and Uruguayan Brian Rodríguez ensured that América ran out with a 3-2 victory in the matchday seven clash of the Liga MX Apertura 2023.
The side from Coapa are now on a decent run of form with the derby win the third consecutive victory and their 54th win over Cruz Azul in the CDMX derby.
‘La Maquina’s´task was made so much harder by the sending off of Carlos Rodríguez in the 37th minute for violent conduct at a point when the game was tied at 1-1. From that moment on, Cruz Azul, who had being enjoying the better of the contest wilted as América took control of proceedings.
Two goals in added time at the end of the first half extinguished the dreams of the Cruz Azul fans gathered at the Azteca and it was only towards the end of the game when Antuna scored the second for Cruz Azul, did America start to suffer. Ultimately the weight of having to play almost an hour of the derby proved to be too much as Club America move to fifth in the table whilst Cruz azul continue to languish at the bottom of the table with only Necaxa having a poorer record than the ‘Celestes’.
