América slip up in Toluca and fail to secure top spot
Despite taking the lead through Diego Valdes in the first half, a second half equaliser from Araujo saw points shared in the ‘Infierno’.
Club América travelled to Toluca for the matchday 9 of the 2023 Liga MX Apertura knowing that a win would see the side from the capital leapfrog San Luis back to the summit of the table.
Sunday’s game at a packed Nemesio Diez stadium was a tightly fought affair and ultimately ended with a share of the spoils and with more than half of the games in the regular season completed it’s Atletico San Luis who are surprise leaders.
Despite the ‘Red Devils’ being reduced to ten men for the final minutes of the game after Tomas Belmonte stamped on Fidalgo, America were unable to find the winner after Maxi Araujo cancelled out Diego Valdes’ opening first half goal.
San Luis lead the way
As the Liga MX Apertura now heads into the home straight, San Luis lead the Aguilas by a single point with Tigres in third following their comprehensive 3-0 derby win over Monterrey. Fourth place FC Juarez slipped up on Friday night at home to Atlas and are now level with 15 points along with the Atlas Foxes and Pumas.
