Club América welcome Chivas Guadalajara to the Estadio Azteca for Mexico’s Súper Clásico this weekend, with the hosts hoping to stay top of the Liga MX Apertura standings on matchday 15. Tigres’ defeat to Puebla on Friday means América are already guaranteed a place in the playoffs, but if they still lead the table come the end of the regular season, they will secure themselves a quarter-final tie against the lowest-ranked postseason team. The in-form Águilas can also extend their 10-game unbeaten streak, a sequence that brought nine wins in a row before Wednesday’s 3-3 draw with Santos Laguna.
Chivas is one of the most historic clubs in Mexican football. Its tradition of playing with only Mexican players has made it even more representative of the country and fans from all over the world, including actors, actresses and other celebrities who have recognised that.
The last time Guadalajara were victorious in Mexico City against América was in the second leg of the Guardianes 2022 quarter-finals, where they won 2-1. On that occasion, Miguel Herrera’s men were obliged to win, having lost the first leg with a goal from Cristian Calderón.

The Guadalajara midfielder assured that his team, unlike the Coapa club, does not need foreign players to stand out. “I identify with Chivas, I’m at the biggest club in Mexico, I feel like I represent Mexicans, we want to show what Mexicans can do. We don’t need foreigners to be a big club,” he said.
The most anticipated game of the Apertura 2022 will take place on Saturday 17 September as Club América and Chivas go head to head in the latest edition of the Liga MX Clásico Nacional, which pits the two most successful clubs in Mexican football history together at the Estadio Azteca. América have 13 titles to their name, Chivas 12, and the panorama in Liga MX this season makes this match particularly important to the outcome of the 2022 Apertura with América just one point ahead of Monterrey as the seek to win the tournament for the first time in four years.
Fernando Ortiz’s side go into the Super Clásico in good form, having won nine of nine before a 3-3 draw against Santos Laguna. Due to that run and their league position, América go into the game as favourites while Chivas will try to cause an upset despite being 10 points adrift of las Águilas and having gone almost two years without a Super Clásico victory.
Both sides meet on matchday 15 of the 2022 Apertura campaign in Liga MX and América is favorite to take the three points. But Chivas wants to end the 10-game unbeaten streak from the Eagles in the most important game of the season.
