América vs Chivas: who has more wins in the Clásico Nacional?

On Saturday night we watched a thoroughly convincing 4-0 performance from Club América to beat rivals Chivas Guadalajara welcome Club América to the Estadio Azteca for Mexico’s Clásico Nacional. That victory in the Liga MX Apertura moves América onto 14 points in fourth place, while Chivas sit just a point behind.

Chivas have been in poor form in recent weeks, now having three losses on the bounce and this one will have hurt the most. But how do the teams look from a historical perspective? We thought we should flick through the history books and share what we found...

Súper Clásico: overall H2H tally

Both teams were desperate for the win to keep them pushing towards the top of the standings, but América have the edge in historic terms. In 250 meetings since the early 1940s - including 38 friendlies - América have accrued 93 wins to Guadalajara’s 78, while there have been 79 draws.

Prior to this latest 4-0 win, the domination was flipped when Chivas took the Clausura semifinals 3-1 in May, but haven’t won in the regular season at the Estadio Azteca since... 2016.

América get the better of Chivas on the big stage

Notably, other than that semi-final, América have made a habit of beating Chivas when it has really mattered: in 13 two-legged clashes in the Mexican league playoffs, the men from Mexico City have been aggregate winners 10 times. The most famous of those playoff ties - indeed, the clubs’ most famous meeting full stop - was the 1983/84 league final, dubbed by the Mexican media as the ‘Final of the Century’. América’s 5-3 aggregate triumph clinched the fourth of their total of 13 national championships - a tally that also puts them ahead of Guadalajara, who have 12.

There have been a total of five Súper Clásicos at the semi-final stage of the league playoffs, with Chivas’ recent win giving them the edge. América triumphed 2-0 over two legs in the last four of the Apertura 2016, a victory that had earned them revenge for Chivas’ 2-0 aggregate win at the same stage of the Apertura 10 years earlier.

Other major meetings between the teams include two Mexican Cup final clashes in 1954 and 1955, both won by América, and a CONCACAF Champions’ Cup first-round tie in 1985, which also brought victory for Los Azul-Cremas. Thirteen years later, the clubs again met in international competition, having both qualified for the Copa Libertadores after Mexican teams were invited to take part in South America’s elite continental club tournament for the first time.

Continuing the pattern of América beating Chivas on the biggest stage, the capital club won home and away (2-0 and 1-0) when they were paired together in the group stage.

What is América’s biggest win over Chivas?

This latest 4-0 is not just about the three points. It also turned out to be the club’s biggest win over their rivals at the Azteca. In September 2019 a 4-1 home win handed the bragging rights to their fans but this one topped it.

As for Chivas, their biggest win in the Clásico was at their own stadium, with a 5-0 triumph coming in 1996.

América and Chivas head-to-head
