Anger in Brazil over Real Madrid star
Team selection and player decisions are made for a variety of reasons, but the latest rationale has some fans scratching their heads.

Endrick was not originally included in Dorival Júnior’s first Brazil squad, but Neymar’s injury reopened the doorfor him to join the team for their two South American World Cup qualifiers. However, despite being called up, the Real Madrid-bound youngster was left on the bench during Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Colombia – for a rather unexpected reason: his height.

The Brazilian manager opted to substitute in Matheus Cunha instead of Endrick, citing the Atlético Madrid striker’s height advantage (1.84m) over Endrick (1.73m). The decision did not sit well with Brazilian fans, who loudly chanted Endrick’s name, demanding to see the former Palmeiras star in action. Dorival, however, stood firm, explaining that he needed a player with a stronger aerial presence to counter Colombia’s style of play.
Endrick decision explained
“I understand the fans’ frustration, but I couldn’t sacrifice another player in the area for the aerial battle. In the end, we had to go with a third man up front – we never do that. But the way the game was unfolding, it was necessary to have more presence in the air. That’s all,” Dorival said after the match.
The same reasoning applied when he substituted Gerson, choosing Joelinton over André, given the 10cm height difference between the two midfielders.
Despite the controversy, Dorival’s decisions paid off – Brazil secured a crucial victory, climbing to second place in the World Cup qualifying standings.
