World Cup Qualifiers
‘Anti-Messi law’ announced ahead of Argentina game
The upcoming clash for the Albiceleste with Paraguay in the World Cup qualifier will have some new rules for fans in attendance.
Paraguay hosts Argentina on Matchday 11 this Thursday, the 14th, at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción. A matchup seemingly without historical incidents, yet the director of football for Paraguay has issued a controversial rule. Fernando Villasboa made it clear that fans wearing certain jersey’s bearing Messi’s name, will not be allowed into the stadium.
What is Paraguay‘s ’Anti-Messi law'?
In an interview with Radio La Red, Paraguay’s director of football had no qualms about declaring this unwritten rule, which will impact all Messi fans.
“Fans wearing jerseys of the Argentine national team, Barça, or Inter Miami with Messi’s name on them will not be allowed into the stadium,” said Fernando Villasboa.
He continued: “No one is allowed to wear a jersey of the Argentine national team, of Argentine clubs, or of clubs with the names of players from other countries. We want to fill the Defensores del Chaco with the colors of the Albirroja, so the players can feel that support from the stands, as we are all part of this match, each in our own way.”
‘Anti-Messi’ follows ‘Anti-Vinicius’
This measure was already applied against Vinicius Jr in the last home game against Brazil, when fans wearing the Real Madrid star’s jersey were not allowed entry. Another reason for this ‘anti-Messi’ rule is to ensure safety in the stadium and prevent possible incidents inside and outside the Defensores del Chaco.
As for World Cup qualifying, Argentina leads the standings with 22 points, three ahead of Colombia, while Paraguay sits in sixth place with 13 points, occupying the last guaranteed spot for the showpiece FIFA tournament in 2026.
