The Tactics Board

Arbeloa gets it right, Guardiola gets it wrong

Update:

Premature analysis tends to collapse when Real Madrid are involved and the eyes of Europe are watching. Once again the club lived up to its legend, with Valverde in superhuman form against a Manchester City side that suffered badly from the Bernabéu effect. It was a disastrous showing for Guardiola and a night that vindicates Arbeloa, if there was ever any need for rehabilitation. In this case, as in many others, the result says everything.

It took two things. Madrid delivered the kind of performance that has defined the club in the Champions League, while Manchester City clearly got their game plan wrong. Arbeloa stuck with the lineup from the Celta Vigo game at Balaídos, with the exception of Huijsen starting, a decision that looks like an investment both now and in the future. He also included Thiago Pitarch. Meritocracy held firm.

Guadiola’s game plan against Real Madrid

Guardiola, meanwhile, left Khusanov to deal with Vinicius, failed to properly reinforce midfield and loaded the lineup with too many attacking players. That is where the game slipped away.

Madrid thrived on City’s tactical miscalculation. Against opponents who leave themselves exposed and fail to control the game, as Guardiola’s team did, Madrid can fly in transition while remaining organized defensively. That is exactly what happened under Arbeloa’s plan. The Madrid coach placed Valverde on the right and kept Pitarch centrally, with a double objective: protect Trent and use the Uruguayan’s pace to attack the space behind City’s defense. What was drawn up on the board played out on the field.

Despite a difficult opening spell, with Doku threatening down the left, the game was soon played on Madrid’s terms. With the defensive block well organized, the lines tight and constant support across the field, Madrid handled the defensive phase with authority. City had no interior game, a sign of the team’s current lack of attacking clarity, something unusual for a Guardiola side.

Every turnover quickly became a Madrid counterattack, and City repeatedly lost their defensive shape. Brahim found space between the lines, Vinicius attacked the open grass and Valverde appeared from deep to take full advantage of City’s generosity, beginning with O’Reilly and ending with Donnarumma. It was a monumental performance from the Uruguayan, one that will be remembered for years.

Madrid’s dominance never drew a response from Guardiola. The manager could not change the story of the game, neither through positional tweaks nor through his substitutions. His reactions were slow and the stage proved too big, perhaps the Bernabéu itself, a stadium that has become increasingly hostile territory for his ambitions.

The myth of City’s tactical superiority fades with time, especially when Madrid stand in the way. Their play was flat and uninspired, lacking sharpness and presence. Haaland once again drifted through the game without making an impact.

Given what unfolded, both logic and history suggest the tie may already have an owner. Arbeloa emerged victorious at the Bernabéu and the pressure now shifts to Guardiola, who will have to find something special to overcome a Madrid side that Europe knows how to respect in triumph and adversity alike. Valverde understands that better than anyone.

Analysis: An open field for Real Madrid

Arbeloa gets it right, Guardiola gets it wrong

Madrid take advantage of City’s high defensive line. Brahim drives forward and Khusanov leaves the door open for Vinicius to run in behind with acres of space. Too much room for Arbeloa’s team.
