Argentina vs Brazil: World Cup qualifying preview

After a 1-0 victory over Uruguay on matchday 13, Argentina are six points clear at the top of CONMEBOL’s 10-team qualifying standings - and are on the cusp of reaching next year’s World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The world and South American champions now just need a draw against Brazil to guarantee one of CONMEBOL’s six automatic qualification spots.

What’s more, Lionel Scaloni’s men could even stamp their ticket to the finals before kick-off, if seventh-placed Bolivia fail to beat Uruguay earlier on Tuesday

Argentina, who are missing injured captain Lionel Messi, edged past the Uruguayans on Friday thanks to a second-half goal by Thiago Almada in Montevideo.

Brazil also won their last World Cup qualifier by a single goal, Vinicius Júnior snatching a 2-1 triumph over Colombia by netting in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

Thursday’s win in Brasilia stretched the third-placed Seleçao’s unbeaten run in qualifying to five games.

Dorival Júnior’s men will now seek revenge for their defeat to Argentina in the reverse fixture against the Albiceleste. In November 2023, Nicolás Otamendi’s header in Rio gave the Argentinians a 1-0 victory that was Brazil’s first ever defeat in a home World Cup qualifier.
