Germán Portanova’s side lost to Venezuela on penalties in the teams’ opening friendly clash in Córdoba on Thursday. Having forced a draw in normal time thanks to Aldana Cometti’s last-gasp equaliser, Commetti and Carolina Troncoso both failed from the spot as La Vinotinto triumphed 7-6.
The game was played in front of 31,800 fans at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes - a record home attendance for the Argentinian women’s national team.
Venezuela
For Venezuela, who are 51st in the latest FIFA world rankings, this week’s victory on penalties was the first time they had beaten Argentina.
Pameli Conti’s team won’t be at the World Cup down under. The Venezuelans could have earned a spot in the inter-confederation qualifying playoffs when they faced Chile in the fifth-place match at last year’s Copa América Femenina, but were beaten on penalties.
