Not Messi, Ronaldo or Mbappé: This is by far the most lethal striker at the 2026 World Cup
One major international star is leaving the rest of world football’s elite far behind in one key scoring metric.

No players in the history of world soccer have scored more international goals than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who are two of only three players to reach a century of goals for their countries. Iranian legend Ali Daei is the other, in case you were wondering.
The duo, however, have also played significantly more international games than almost everyone else, which means there are three current World Cup stars who have scored more than 50 times for their national teams and boast superior strike rates to the veteran pair. Kylian Mbappé is not one of them.

Ronaldo and Messi by the numbers
Ronaldo’s 143 goals for Portugal have come in 229 appearances, both records at international level. That works out at 0.62 goals per game, down from his club average of 0.76.
Incidentally, Neymar was not only born on the same day as Ronaldo (Feb. 5), but also has the exact same scoring average for Brazil: 79 goals in 128 games.
Compared to Ronaldo, Messi actually has a higher scoring rate at club level (0.83 goals per game), but a slightly lower rate for Argentina. His 120 goals in 200 caps works out at 0.6 per appearance.
Interestingly, that is the exact same scoring rate as Serbia’s Aleksandar Mitrovic (64 goals in 106 games), former Spain star David Villa (59 in 98) and former Czech Republic striker Jan Koller (55 in 91).
Mbappé, fresh from becoming France’s all-time top scorer in his first game of the 2026 World Cup, sits just behind at 0.59 goals per game (58 in 99 caps).
The Haaland exception
One of the Real Madrid forward’s contemporaries, however, completely blows them, Ronaldo, Messi and everyone else out of the water when it comes to pure international scoring efficiency.
That man is Erling Haaland, who has netted 57 goals in only 51 games for Norway, a remarkable 1.12 goals per game. That is even more impressive given Norway had not qualified for the World Cup since 1994 and have only once appeared at the European Championship, in 2000.
The true international scoring elite
Only two players in history have been more lethal.
Vivian Woodward scored 75 goals in 53 games for England between 1903 and 1914, a rate of 1.42 per game. However, more than half of those came in amateur matches, which were considered official internationals for the opposition at the time.
Poul Nielsen of Denmark scored 52 goals in 38 games from 1910 to 1925, a rate of 1.37 per game.

Two more 2026 World Cup stars beat Ronaldo and Messi
You might think Ronaldo, Messi and Mbappé would lead the way among modern stars, but two players are actually ahead of them.
Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku (90 goals in 128 caps) and England captain Harry Kane (81 in 115) both post a strike rate of 0.7 per game and are on track to reach the 100-goal club before their careers end.
Other notable names ahead of Ronaldo and Messi include Hungarian icons Sándor Kocsis (1.1) and Ferenc Puskás (0.94), West Germany legend Gerd Müller (1.1), Brazilian trio Pelé (0.84), Romário (0.79) and Ronaldo Nazário (0.63), and former Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta (0.72).
