Argentine World Cup winner opens his account for Tigres in Leagues Cup thrashing
Three weeks after joining the Liga MX giants, Ángel Correa really made his mark against Houston Dynamo.
Tigres started their 2025 Leagues Cup debut with a win, defeating the Houston Dynamo 4-1 on the opening night of the competition.
After a rather sluggish first half-hour the Liga MX side looked much improved after the entry of Edgar López for Nicolás Ibáñez, who left the Leagues Cup clash in discomfort.
In the Houston goal Jonathan Bond made two good saves to keep the Mexican side out but it wasn’t to last. With half time approaching Guido Pizarro’s side deservedly broke the deadlock through their new signing, Ángel Correa. The Argentine received the ball on the edge of the area after a long pass from Juan Brunetta, and finished at the far post to make it 1-0.
The start of the second half was as good as it could have been for the home side, who found themselves with an early goal from Ondřej Lingr. The Czech took advantage of a poor clearance from Juan Brunetta and beat Nahuel Guzmán in the 46th minute.
The sides were level but it didn’t last long for the Texans. Diego Lainez nudged Tigres ahead with a stunning goal, striking a fine left-footed shot from the edge of the area in the 62nd minute. With the visitors now on top, Correa made his presence felt again just minutes later as he rounded the Dynamo goalkeeper to make it 3-1.
With everything under control a late volley from Ozziel Herrera sealed the opening night victory for Tigres, setting up their next game against San Diego FC.
