Update:

In a stunning move, Tigres have secured their first signing ahead of the Apertura 2025 tournament, bringing in Atlético Madrid’s Ángel Correa.

Correa to join on long-term deal after CWC

Sources close to the club have confirmed to AS México that the Liga MX team has finalized a deal with the forward, who has signed a five-year contract. Correa, a world champion with Argentina, will bolster a Tigres roster led by French striker André Pierre-Gignac.

Currently at the Club World Cup with Atlético, Correa will officially join Tigres after the tournament.

The 30-year-old was prompted to consider offers from other clubs after being told by Los Rojiblancos that he is not part of Atlético head coach Diego Simeone’s plans.

Tigres’ management, led by Mauricio Culebro, made contact with Correa’s representatives several months ago. From the initial discussions, the proposal was well received by the player’s camp.

Negotiations began in May, and a salary agreement was reached. Correa said his goodbyes to the Atlético fans on May 18, playing his final game at the Estadio Metropolitano in a 4-1 LaLiga win over Real Betis.

On June 13, Tigres then made a formal offer to Atlético, reportedly of around $10 million. The LaLiga club accepted the offer, setting the stage for the Mexicans to beat out competition from Argentinians River Plate and Turkish team Galatasaray.

Correa’s career so far

Correa, who won the Copa Libertadores with San Lorenzo de Almagro in 2014, is set to bring an end to his European club career after 11 years at Atlético. During his time there, he played 469 matches, scored 88 goals, provided 65 assists and won three trophies:

  • 2020/21 LaLiga title
  • 2017/18 Europa League
  • 2018 UEFA Super Cup

With the Argentina national team, Correa has scored three goals in 28 caps. With the Albiceleste, he has won the Copa América in 2021 and, in the most significant achievement of his career, lifted the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
