Armando González, on the cusp of making Chivas history
Chivas is close to matching its all-time high in short tournaments, a streak that could make this team the best in history.

Chivas is just three points away from matching its all‑time best performance in Mexico’s short‑season era (34 points). Under head coach Gabriel Milito, Guadalajara is on the verge of becoming the club’s strongest team in the last 30 years. And individually, one player is stealing the spotlight: Armando “La Hormiga” González, who’s knocking on the door of history.
The 22‑year‑old striker has quickly become one of the brightest scoring hopes for Mexican soccer—a country that hasn’t seen a homegrown forward with this kind of upside in a very long time. Nicknamed the “Otaku of Goals,” González is closing in on records that once seemed untouchable.
His two‑goal performance in Sunday’s 2–2 draw against Pumas pushed him to 12 goals in the current Clausura 2026, making him the league’s outright scoring leader ahead of Atlético San Luis striker Joao Pedro (11). Last season, González captured his first scoring title—also with 12 goals.

One goal away from the club record
Now he has four matches left (against Tigres, Puebla, Necaxa, and Tijuana) to etch his name permanently into Chivas history. At the club level, he’s just one goal away from tying the franchise record for most goals in a short tournament: Gabriel García’s 13 during the Winter 1996 season.
No Chivas player has matched that mark in the last 30 years. González needs only one goal to tie it and two to break it. With four games remaining—two of them at home—he’s well‑positioned to do it. His scoring pace is remarkable: 12 goals in 13 matches.
But he’s also chasing a record that goes beyond the short‑season era. His 2025–2026 campaign has been extraordinary: 12 goals in the Apertura and 12 more in the Clausura. That total of 24 already makes him the second‑highest scorer in a single Chivas season.

Chivas legends
He’s now ahead of club legends like Omar Bravo (22) and Salvador Reyes (21), who never reached that number in a single soccer year. Only one Chivas player has ever scored more in that span: Jaime Pajarito, who netted 27 goals in the 1980–1981 season back when Mexico still used long tournaments.
González is just three goals away from tying that record—or four from breaking it. If he hits that four‑goal mark, he’ll become the top scorer in Chivas history for a single season. What “La Hormiga” is doing right now may not be fully appreciated yet—and he still has his entire career ahead of him.

Beyond club records, his rise is also significant for Mexican soccer as a whole. He’s already surpassed Joao Pedro in the scoring race, and with four matches left, he’s in a strong position to compete for another individual scoring title. It would be the second of his career. Mexico hasn’t had a homegrown back‑to‑back scoring champion in 25 years.
A full quarter‑century has passed since Jared Borgetti pulled it off. Since then, only a handful of Mexican players have won a scoring title—and none have done it in consecutive tournaments. Borgetti achieved it in Winter 2000 (17 goals) and Summer 2001 (13). Armando González is now chasing that same historic path.
