Javier Mascherano leaves Inter Miami: Why is the coach leaving Miami?
The Argentine departs the Herons just months after leading the club to a first MLS Cup triumph.


Javier Mascherano is stepping down as Inter Miami head coach with immediate effect, a club statement on Tuesday announced. The 41-year-old took charge of Miami for the 2025 MLS season, leading the team to a first championship.

A former teammate of Lionel Messi, Mascherano has no prior experience as a senior head coach but had led the Argentina youth national teams at U20 and U23 level. After a triumphant 2025 season the Herons have struggled in 2026, despite making a serious of ambitious additions to the squad in the offseason.
Miami have won three of their first seven MLS fixtures this year and were eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League by Eastern Conference rivals Nashville SC. The news of Mascherano’s departure was a shock but he cited “personal reasons” for the decision. He has not yet offered further explanation on the departure.

In a statement Mascherano said: “I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF.”
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the Club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.”
The club’s co-owner Jorge Mas paid tribute to Mascherano for his work with the team, taking them to a first MLS Cup triumph. Mas wrote: “Javier will forever be part of this Club’s history and will always hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family. Not only for being a key part of unforgettable achievements, such as winning the MLS Cup and the team’s historic performance at the Club World Cup, but also for the example he set through his dedication and daily work leading the team.“
The Athletic reports that Inter Miami sporting director Guillermo Hoyos has taken team practice on Monday in Mascherano’s absence and is in the frame to lead the team on an interim basis.
