Arsenal will be desperate to get back to winning ways as soon as possible with their recent blip – one point from their last three league fixtures – seeing them surrender top spot in the Premier League to Manchester City. Mid-table Villa, meanwhile, have also had a downturn in form of late, conceding seven goals in their last two games, which ended in defeats to Leicester and City.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal preview

Aston Villa have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes since Unai Emery took charge before the World Cup break, with impressive victories over Manchester United, Tottenham and Brighton helping them move clear of the relegation zone when it looked as if they might be in trouble. The Villains sit fairly comfortably in mid-table, 10 points clear of the bottom three, despite back-to-back defeats. Diego Carlos is back in training but won’t be involved, although fellow central defender Tyrone Mings could return to the starting eleven after injury. Bertrand Traoré and backup goalkeeper Robin Olsen are also available again but neither is likely to start.

Arsenal were eight points clear at the top of the table just a couple of weeks ago but a defeat to Everton followed by a draw at home to Brentford meant that Manchester City knew they would move into first place on goal difference with a win at the Emirates on Wednesday, which is exactly what they achieved. Taking into account the FA Cup loss to City at the end of January, the Gunners have now lost three and drawn one of their last four matches. Thomas Partey’s absence was key in midweek and he is a major doubt for the game at Villa Park. Fellow midfielder Mohamed Elneny and striker Gabriel Jesus are not yet ready to return to injuries but Emile Smith-Rowe has resumed full training and could return.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal prediction

Partey is a crucial player for the Gunners and his likely absence would be a major blow once again for Mikel Arteta. Villa’s form has been up and down but they have scored plenty of goals of late and could trouble the Arsenal defence.
