Atlas-Toluca season opener runs risk of postponement
Following confirmation that the Mazatlan game was postponed due to unrest in Sinaloa, the state of the pitch at Atlas’ Stadium could see the game cancelled.
After Liga MX having to reschedule the Clausura 2023 opening day match between Mazatlán and León due to the violence unleashed in the state of Sinaloa following the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán, another matchday 1 contest is in danger of not taking place as scheduled.
Various sources claim that the state of the pitch at Atlas’ Jalisco Stadium, following a series of concerts and recent use at the Copa Sky have seen a major deterioration on the playing surface which may lead to the game against Deportivo Toluca getting moved.
The Atlas FC board of directors have discussed the issue with Liga MX and a definitive answer to resolve the situation is expected on 6 January. The Guadalajara based club have also disabled ticket sales on their online platform as a precautionary measure.
Copa Sky damage
The Jalisco Stadium was one of the four venues to host the preseason Copa Sky tournament with six games played at the 55,000 capacity ground over a ten day period. These games coupled with the venue hosting a series of concerts by music group Los Bukis have lead to a constant strain on the playing surface with the Copa Sky final between Chivas and Cruz Azul having to be moved to the Akron Stadium.
