Atlético Madrid furious after controversial VAR call favors Barcelona, demands answers
Atlético questions refereeing consistency after red card for Gerard Martín was overturned, comparing decision to similar incidents and calling for answers from officials.

Frustration inside Atlético Madrid continues to grow in the hours following their LaLiga defeat to Barcelona at the Metropolitano. Club officials and players are furious over a key refereeing decision involving Barcelona defender Gerard Martín. Referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer initially showed Martín a red card, only to downgrade it to yellow after reviewing the play on VAR.
Atlético formally requests clarification
Atlético has now formally asked Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees for an explanation, pointing to what they see as inconsistent application of the rules in similar situations.
The club referenced a recent incident in a match between Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano. In that case, Betis player Valentín was deemed deserving of a red card after a challenge on Ratiu, a decision the refereeing body later supported. Atlético argues the Martín challenge was nearly identical.

“Impossible to compete” under shifting standards
Inside the club, the frustration is boiling over.
“It’s impossible to compete when you’re told one set of rules and something else is applied,” club sources said. They added that VAR is supposed to intervene only in “clear and obvious errors,” a standard they believe was not followed.
Atlético also voiced concern about VAR officials undermining on-field referees. “VAR referees end up hurting their colleagues. We wish they defended them the way we do,” sources said.

Growing sense of bias?
The Madrid club believes it has now been on the wrong end of major officiating decisions in back-to-back games, coincidentally against Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Club officials stopped short of making more extreme accusations, but hinted at what they see as a pattern. They emphasized that, unlike others, they have not publicly accused referees of corruption, instead choosing to seek formal clarification.
Atlético is now waiting for the official review of this latest matchday, hoping it will reaffirm the standard previously outlined in the Betis-Rayo incident, one they believe was ignored against Barcelona.
Simeone backs club stance
There is also confusion over the referee’s reasoning. Busquets Ferrer reportedly described Martín’s challenge as reckless, yet still downgraded the punishment from red to yellow.
Atlético fully supports head coach Diego Simeone, who called for a clear and thorough explanation from the refereeing authorities.
For now, the controversy shows no signs of fading, with Atlético demanding answers and greater consistency in how the rules are enforced at the highest level of Spanish soccer.
