Barcelona and Xavi plan to terminate Sergiño Dest’s contract
Sergiño Dest’s pre-season has both Barcelona and Xavi worried, who are now considering terminating the contract of the American defender.
It seemed that the tide had turned for Sergiño Dest at FC Barcelona who, after not going out on loan or back to Italian side AC Milan, seemed to be part of the plans for Xavi and co. for the 23/24 campaign. However, things have spun around 180º, and it now appears that Dest is on his way out of the Spanish club.
The American saw minutes for Barça against both Arsenal and Real Madrid; Xavi wanted to observe the former Ajax player, but nothing worked well on the pitch and the manager is now looking for a new full-back to replace the American as a part of the squad.
Which right-back do Barça want to sign?
Julián Araujo’s departure on loan seemed to open the door for the man born in The Netherlands, but the blaugrana are already looking at other alternatives, such as Iván Fresneda, the full-back currently playing for Valladolid.
Another of the options Xavi Hernández has in mind is the purchase of João Cancelo, the full-back who most recently featured for Bayern Münich in the Bundesliga, and who could arrive if Barça can finalise the sale of midfielder Ousmane Dembée, who is currently negotiating a move to French side, PSG.
Dest failed to impress Xavi, who wants to get rid of him
Dest’s wish was to stay at the Spanish club and just a few days ago he revealed that he was in “a difficult moment in my career and in this situation you can take two paths: be negative or think positive and I am always one of those who has a positive mentality to work and change things.”
As things stand, the American has not entered in Xavi’s thinking for the upcoming season; even in the absence of offers, they have thought about terminating his contract, according to AS collaborator Javi Miguel, who also assured that the Catalans want to wait until the end of the market to make a decision.
Dest’s disaster against Madrid
In Barcelona’s victory against Real Madrid, the American spent the last 15 minutes of the match being tormented by Los Blancos winger, Vinicius Jr., a situation that did not make Xavi a happy man and one that now looks to be the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of seeing a future for him at the LaLiga champions.
Dest played 325 minutes on loan with Milan, where he did not impress manager Stefano Pioli either, who opted against renewing his loan and instead sent him back to the Spanish team, who are now thinking hard about what is the best option for his uncertain future.
