A race against time is underway to secure Brazil’s next diamond. According to AS, Barcelona are closing in on Eduardo Conceição, the latest prospect to emerge from Palmeiras’ prolific youth academy. The Catalan club have been monitoring his progress since before his breakout performance at the recent Copinha tournament. Under contract until January 2029, his release clause is set at $117 million, although Palmeiras would be willing to accept around half that figure, $58.5 million, including both fixed and variable payments.

Barcelona are keen to avoid repeating past mistakes, such as those involving Endrick, Estêvão, or, more recently, Rayan. As a result, the Blaugrana have taken the lead in the race to sign Eduardo Conceição. Negotiations have moved quickly, aided by a strong relationship with his representatives and with Palmeiras themselves, who are open to a deal, albeit within certain limits. Reports from Brazil indicate that several clubs are pursuing the striker.

Manchester City and Chelsea are the main rivals in what is shaping up to be a long race. For now, they are the only other clubs negotiating at a similar level to Barça. According to ESPN Brasil, City have submitted an offer of around $46.8 million, the highest bid received so far at Palmeiras. Meanwhile, BlueCo, the ownership group behind Chelsea and Strasbourg, are closely monitoring the situation as they prepare their first formal proposal.

At just 16 years old, Eduardo Conceição has attracted global attention. Numerous clubs have travelled to São Paulo to watch him, but it is at the South American Under-17 Championship that he has truly announced himself. Representing Brazil, he is on course to be named the tournament’s MVP. In Paraguay, he has emerged as one of the standout players, already recording a goal, two assists, and a series of eye-catching performances. Palmeiras view him as a “special” and “different” talent, and are aiming to complete another multi-million-dollar deal.

His attacking profile is reminiscent of Estêvão’s early days, now a Chelsea player. He featured in seven Copinha matches, scoring four goals and providing three assists. The numbers are impressive, but they only tell part of the story. To fully appreciate his quality, it is enough to watch how he reads the game. Imaginative, quick, and, like many great Brazilian attackers, highly skilful. “I love one-on-one situations, dribbling, and outpacing my opponents,” he said in an interview with AS.

If the transfer is completed soon, Eduardo will not be able to move to Europe until he turns 18. By then, he is expected to be significantly more developed. Palmeiras plan to give him his first-team debut this season and, from next year, establish him as a key player, following the path taken by Endrick and Estêvão. It is a strategy that continues to pay off, and one worth millions.
