Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski: playing in MLS was “firmly in my mind”

The Polish striker commented on a potential move to MLS, as well as opening up on whether he could be tempted by Saudi Arabian cash.

Where does Robert Lewandowski keep finding these microphones? The Polish striker has once again been given the opportunity to speak in public about anything that he likes, and this time he’s chosen to talk about how he’s “a human” and not " a machine” anymore, but we’ll get to that.

The Barcelona man has had a lot of publicity lately, all thanks to his complaining about Xavi’s system and then Polish football’s way of doing things. A couple of days ago, Fernando Santos was sacked as Poland manager. Coincidence? I’ll let you decide.

Lewandowski complains at having no support at Barça

Despite scoring two goals in four games with Barça this season, Lewandowski does not look a happy man and said just last week that “we are Barcelona and we are not only expected to win but with an offensive style. Recently this has not been how it should be, so we’ve been trying to create more chances in the games... Sometimes we don’t play with enough attacking players on the pitch, I don’t have any support so I try to find the best solution for the team.” Does Robert just need a hug?

Given that he seems so downbeat about Barça, Lewandowski was asked whether or not he could be tempted by Saudi Arabian and its deep pockets, an option that many of Europe’s top talent have not been able to turn down. “Saudi Arabia?” he questioned back, “I don’t even think about that. I’m super happy at Barcelona, in the team, in the city, with my family. As a person, I’m happy.”

Maybe we just have different ways of expressing things, then. However, before we get too excited that happy Bobby is back for good, he did take the time to bring us all back down to Earth with a good, old-fashioned moan about how things were better in the old days: “before Barcelona I was a little bit of a machine, now I’m more human. I have a couple of years of contract here with another year option.”

Will Robert Lewandowski play in MLS in the future?

Given his instant flicking between being happy and overtly depressed by the fact he plays football for a living, Lewandowski was asked about where else he could play, specifically, MLS. “Before the coronavirus pandemic”, he said, “the idea of MLS was firmly in my mind. But somehow I changed my mind afterwards. After the chapter at Barcelona, that’s difficult to imagine.”

Before the microphone was removed from under his chin like a buttercup, Lewandowski remembered that he had in fact spent a career being media trained and finally gave an answer about which nobody in club colours will be massaging their temples: “It’s about making memories, taking in every moment, every win in your head. Some of the comments about the number of goals that I scored were crazy, especially in the Munich season where I got 41″.

“Breaking records isn’t my only objective”, he continued, “the most important thing is helping my team to win and to enjoy the games. These are my final years in the world of football, two, maybe three. Don’t get me wrong: I still want to achieve a lot and score goals, but I’m not as tenacious as before.”
