Barcelona–Real Madrid rivalry erupts into a legal battle over Negreira accusations

The Catalan club has submitted a conciliation request ahead of taking legal action against the Real Madrid president for slander.

Update:

The historic rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid has officially crossed from the pitch into the courtroom. Tensions spiked again yesterday when Barça announced it has filed a formal conciliation demand—the mandatory first step before a criminal defamation complaint—against Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez. The club is demanding a full retraction for what it calls “false and defamatory” statements that damage Barcelona’s image and reputation.

What triggered the legal showdown?

The conflict stems from comments Pérez made on May 12, when he claimed that during his tenure he had won seven LaLiga titles but “could have won 14,” implying that the other seven were “stolen.”

The remark was widely interpreted as an accusation that Barcelona’s championships were influenced by alleged referee corruption tied to the Negreira case.

Barcelona’s interim president, Rafa Yuste, initially said the club would study Pérez’s comments. This week, speaking before the Spanish Senate, he confirmed that Barça’s legal team had already prepared all necessary documentation.

If Pérez refuses to retract his statements—which appears unlikely, given he has vowed to go “to the end” in the Negreira matter—Barcelona plans to file a criminal defamation complaint under Article 205 of the Spanish Penal Code.

What Barcelona formally communicated

Here is Barça’s official statement, in full:

“FC Barcelona informs that, on this day, the mandatory conciliation claim prior to the filing of a criminal complaint for an offence of slander under Article 205 of the Penal Code has been submitted against the President of Real Madrid, Mr. Florentino Pérez, as a result of the statements made by him at the press conference held on 12 May and in an interview with a media outlet the following day.

“The purpose of this claim is for Mr. Pérez to retract certain statements that he made with knowledge of their falsity and which are slanderous and offensive to the image and reputation of the Club.

“Should this claim not be duly addressed, FC Barcelona will proceed with the filing of the corresponding criminal complaint.”

What comes next?

If no agreement is reached in the conciliation phase, the next step is a full criminal complaint, escalating the already‑tense relationship between the two giants of Spanish soccer.
