“I don’t want a team like Argentina; that has nothing to do with soccer. I want us to be like Spain.”

More than a week has passed since the World Cup came to an end, with Spain lifting its second title and earning widespread praise for its performances. The tournament continues to generate reaction, especially in Germany, where an earlier-than-expected exit has prompted major changes, including the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as head coach.

Comparisons are never easy, but many believe Germany should take inspiration from other national teams if it wants to compete for major trophies again. Speaking Monday at the International Coaches Congress in Mainz, German Football Association (DFB) sporting director Rudi Völler made it clear which team he does not believe Germany should emulate.

Germany look to Spain

“We, as Germany, have to defend better. A lot of people pointed to Argentina as the example, and I thought that was the wrong example. Suddenly, Argentina became the ultimate benchmark. I found that a little hypocritical. I don’t want a team that plays like Argentina. That has nothing to do with soccer. Yes, they were world champions and this time they finished as runners-up. But honestly, I don’t understand all the praise.”

While criticizing Argentina’s style of play, Völler said he would much rather see Germany resemble the current world champion.

“Spain deserved every bit of praise it received. Not only because of the way it keeps possession and attacks, but also because of the way it defends. They are the example to follow. I also liked England very much.”
