Barcelona’s US star Dest could miss season run-in
The American full-back has had a mixed time of things and his latest injury could see his campaign come to an early end.
Defeat to Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou was bad enough, as the Xavi revival at Barcelona hit another bump in the road. But then came the news that Sergino Dest could be out for the remainder of the season after picking up a hamstring injury in Sunday’s clash.
Dest return date unknown as Barça chase strong finish
Clement Lenglet replaced the US international at half-time in a game that finished 1-0 to the visitors from the south of Madrid. Afterwards Dest underwent tests and the club confirmed that the injury was in his right hamstring, although no return date was provided.
“Tests carried out on Sergino Dest have confirmed that the player has injured the semitendinosus muscle in his right hamstring. The player is unavailable for selection and his recovery will dictate his return,” the often vague statement read, but similar injuries can take several weeks.
It was the third consecutive home defeat for Barça and it was another welcomed gift for LaLiga leaders Real Madrid. The eternal rivals from the capital now only need a point, with five games to go, to secure another title.
Xavi’s next game will at home to Mallorca followed by a trip to Seville to face Real Betis, who were crowned Copa del Rey winners at the weekend. As this season peters out, all eyes at the Catalan club will be on preparing for a return to greatness next year... but that will require a lot of work.
