BBC embarrassment as adult noises played over Gary Lineker during FA Cup match coverage
The former England player did well to keep a straight face during a curious moment on BBC TV in the UK.
OK, we’ve all been there. We have all opened our phones to see or hear something we weren’t expecting, and immediately wanting to fall through the crust of the Earth and plunge into it’s molten core. It’s normal, it happens all the time. Just not in front of millions of viewers on national television.
The BBC was plunged into embarrassment on Tuesday 17 January during BBC One’s live coverage of the FA Cup game between Wolves and Liverpool. While going through the pre-match routine of analysis and comments on both sides, BBC pundit Danny Murphy had just finished giving his opinion when adult noises were heard in the background.
Where did the noises come from?
The not-safe-for-work sounds lasted over 20 seconds as viewers watched host Gary Lineker try to keep a straight face amidst the confusion, with the presenter saying “I don’t know who’s making that noise”, before passing over to former Newcastle striker, Alan Shearer, who was also laughing.
It was revealed once the match coverage had finished what exactly had happened. Gary Lineker posted a picture of an old mobile phone that had been hidden inside the BBC studio, saying “well, we found this taped to the back of the set. As sabotage goes it was quite amusing.”
Lineker later tweeted “nothing to moan about, I guess” with a screenshot of the UK trends list, which was dominated by the BBC One incident. At least Gary took it well.
