One of the recurring themes ahead of the Copa América 2024 is the future of Inter Miami forward Luis Suárez and his possible participation in the tournament with the Uruguayan national team. This Sunday, Marcelo Bielsa’s squad list was announced for the preparation match that La Celeste will play against Mexico, and El Pistolero did not appear in the call-up.

The Uruguay national team Twitter announced the list of players who will travel to Denver for the friendly they have on Wednesday, June 5 and the absence of Suárez, a player widely expected to be selected, is striking. In the hole left by the former Barça man, surprise names such as Cesar Araújo and Facundo Torres, who play for Orlando City, appear.

When do Uruguay play against the USMNT in the Copa América?

The only true centre forward called up by Bielsa is Darwin Núñez, along with other attackers Luciano Rodríguez, Facundo Torres, Brian Rodríguez, Maximiliano Araújo and Facundo Pellistri. Other key players are Rodrigo Bentancur, Manuel Ugarte, Nahitan Nández, José María Giménez and Sergio Rochet, who will act as the more experienced heads.

The match against Mexico will be Uruguay’s last match before the Copa América 2024; they will have 18 days before their tournament debut against Panama on Day 1 from the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami (23/06). La Celeste’s next matches will be against Bolivia at MetLife Stadium (06/27) and the United States at Arrowhead Stadium (07/01).

Will Suárez stay with Inter Miami during the Copa América?

At the moment, nobody is quite sure, although this squad is a huge hint that Suárez will indeed be left out by Bielsa and instead remain in Miami to fight in MLS.

After Tata Martino’s team drew 3-3 against St. Louis City at Chase Stadium, Luis Suárez sent a message this Sunday and hinted at his commitment to the Herons: “A point that tastes like nothing, we wanted to win at home but we couldn’t. Now it’s time to rest but always thinking about our objectives. Now it’s time to rest, but always thinking about our objectives. Let’s go Inter Miami!”

Suárez’s current momentum in Major League Soccer 2024 has him at the top of the form charts with 12 goals and 5 assists in 16 games played. El Pistolero’s presence in the Miami side has been key for them this season and they currently lead the Eastern Conference. Their next match will be on Saturday, June 15 against Philadelphia Union.
