Boca Juniors director Mauricio Serna has spoken of the Argentinian club’s desire to sign Roger Martínez, who is out of contract at Liga MX side Club América this summer.

“We’ve always liked Martínez”

Roger Martínez will always interest us,” Serna told an interview with the Argentinian radio station AM del Plata on Monday. “We’ve always liked him.”

Serna’s comments suggest that Boca, who have targeted Martínez on several previous occasions, may attempt to sign the winger on a free transfer when his América deal expires on 30 June.

Player keen on European switch

Boca are just one of a number of clubs eyeing a swoop for Martínez, who has won 25 caps for Colombia. Several Liga MX sides have enquired about a potential transfer - including América’s Mexico City rivals Cruz Azul - while teams in Brazil, MLS and Saudi Arabia have also registered an interest.

However, sources close to Martínez have told AS that his first choice would be to move to European soccer, where he has previously played for Spanish club Villarreal.

Struggling to get into América team

During the 2022/23 Liga MX season, the forward has made just 19 appearances across the Apertura 2022 and Clausura 2023 tournaments, scoring four goals and supplying two assists. A hamstring injury suffered in March has contributed to his lack of more regular game time.

In all, the 28-year-old has registered 35 goals and 17 assists in 160 games for América, having joined the 13-time Mexican champions from Chinese club Jiangsu Suning in June 2018.
