Once Borussia Dortmund had packed up Jude Bellingham’s things from the training centre and posted them to Madrid, they already had their eye on the next move: Edson Álvarez. The Bundesliga side have been searching for a midfielder since the beginning of the transfer market and after various weeks of weighing things up, it seems they have settled on the Mexican and have tabled a formal offer to Ajax for the player.

Florian Plettenberg, a journalist with Sky Sports, broke the story, highlighting the fact that the club had already presented the player himself with a contract offer, knowing that the deal was going to be a long and costly one as Ajax are reportedly settling for no less than €45-50 million.

Which other teams are also interested in Álvarez?

The player has received an official offer from BVB now - confirmed. He was waiting for it for days as he only wants to join Dortmund. BVB bosses valuates him as a possible top transfer”, said Plettenberg.

Edson has every intention of going to Borussia, and it is his main objective after being at Ajax for four years. However, the Bundesliga side is not the only club interested in the player, as West Ham are said to be monitoring the situation, given the possible exit of Declan Rice to Arsenal.

Mexico are in a bad run of form

For now, Edson is currently on international duty with Mexico, who lost 3-0 to USMNT in the semi-final of the Concacaf Nations League, a performance which Santiago Giménez said was “a reality check” and that “[Mexico] weren’t up to the task of the United States who tried to win from the first minute - we never had that intention.”

After the tournament, El Tri will play in the Gold Cup where the team will play against Honduras on Sunday 25 June.
