Brazil vs Dominican Republic: Live blog
Brazil got their U20 World Cup campaign up and running with a six-goal win over the Dominican Republic.
It was a complete performance from Ramon Menezes' side, who came into the game off the back of a disappointing defeat to Italy in their opening fixture of the tournament.
This time there were no such struggles and a brilliant team performance ended in a 6-0 victory with six different goal-scorers.
The Dominican Republic's defence worked tirelessly to keep the game goalless for the first 35 minutes but once breached they struggled to stem the flow.
Brazil can take confidence into their final group stage game. For the Dominicans, their World Cup journey is now almost certainly over.

Full time whistle at the Estadio Malvinas, where Brazil ran out comfortable winners to get their tournament underway.
It's a yellow for Yunior Peralta. A fair decision, I'd say.
Brazil are really looking to exact some revenge for their loss to Italy here.

It's five for Brazil and that's probably a fair reflection of the dominance that they have enjoyed tonight.

An attempt to play out from the back ends in a four-on-three for Brazil and Marlon Gomez finishes with ease.

Another five for the Dominicans to endure. They eat up a few seconds by drawing a foul in their defensive third.

Another opening from Brazil! This time it came from a Kaiki Bruno on the left, dancing through the Dominican defence but his shot is blocked.
The Brazilians are not content with four here...
What a pity for the Dominican talisman. He will now miss the next, and potentially final, game of his team's tournament.
This is the first time that the Dominican republican have qualified for the U20 World Cup and they will be without Azcona for their crucial last group stage fixture.

The Dominican captain is dismissed for a second booking, lunging in on Marlon Gomes on the edge of the box.

Giovane rifles a left footed shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.
No more than Brazil deserve, they're up and running now.
Another substitution, Alejandro Martin comes on to replace Israel Boatright for the Dominican Republic.
That's Marcos Leonardo's last involvement today.
He and Marquinhos, who also impressed, are withdrawn with 15 minutes remaining. Ronald and Martins come on in their place.

Marcos Leonardo misses an easy header to make it four, and to take his personal tally for the tournament to four.
The Brazilian striker holds his head in his hands, and is promptly hooked.
Another low cross whipped in from the left, another Dominican clearance.
You can't fault their effort here, the DOminican Republic.
The free kick, from a wide position on the left, is fired goalwards by Kevin. Validez parries it out and away from danger.

Once again, a brilliant run from the brilliantly-named Kevin.
The Brazilian winger skips past the Dominican full back and is hauled down in desperation.
Good chance to put in a delivery now.

How did that stay out? First Kevin send a low ball across the face of goal, evading all touches. It's picked up on the far side and fired back across the box, just missing the outstretched boost of Marcos Leonardo a the back post.
That could/should have been four.
Couple of changes for DOminican Republic now. De Pena and Montes are off, on come Tamarez and Schmidhauser.
Brazil withdraw captain Andrey Santos and winger Savio, who has been the most impressive player so far.
Nascimiento and Giovane come on to replace them.

Brazil are still on the offensive here and Leonardo pinches the ball off the Dominican backline and skips past a recovering defender. His effort is firmly struck but too central to beat Validez.
What's the plan for Brazil now? Normally you might assume that they would take off some key players and ease up for the remaining half an hour.
But after losing their first game of the tournament they know that goal difference could be crucial. With that in mind, this could be a long 30 minutes for the Dominican Republic.
It's a first U20 goal for Central defender Jean who powers the ball past Validez in the Dominican net. They had just started to show a little more ambition in recent minutes but are now punished by a ruthless Brazil

The corner was swung in by Savio and finds the head of Jean at the front post.
Clever ball from the Dominican defence fans Angel Montes in space between the lines. He makes a sharp turn but is quickly crowded out.
Brazil are back on the attack now, Salvio wins a corner.
Brilliant touch from Savio takes him clear down the right wing, he really is great. He powers into the box and squares the ball but Marquinhos' effort bounces wide of the goal.
Brazil picking up the pace once again here.
Two successive corners are repelled by Dominican Republic. They win a goal kick and have a chance to breathe now.

Nearly a third for Brazil and a second for Savio.
Brazilian corner is pinged out to the edhe of the box and the winger lets fly from distance. It seemed to take a deflection and is pushed wide by Validez. Another corner to follow.
The second 45 begins in much the same way as the first was played: Brazil controlling the ball, the Dominicans defending staunchly.

Both teams make subs at the break. Kevin comes on for Brazil, replacing Biro.
Jason Yambitis and Yunior Peralta enter the fray for the Dominican Republic.
Can the Dominican Republic turn it around?
Ahead of the Brazil fixture, Dominican head coach Water Benítez said: “After the analysis of the first game we have made preparations for Brazil. We are going to show our offensive qualities, but we must be patient with the ball.”
“We know what they can do and that they will surely come looking for us,” he added. “They will pressure us and not let us play our game, we must have a balance both in attack and defence”.
ICYMI: Nigeria go top
Shortly before Brazil and the Dominican Republic took to the field, Nigeria took the top spot in Group D with a 2-0 win over Italy. They are now guaranteed to go through to the last-16 round of the U20 World Cup, but will face Brazil in the final group game this weekend.
A tough proposition for Ramon Menezes' side.

Brazil go into the break with a two-goal lead. Well deserved given their dominance in the opening 45 minutes.

A final sighting for the Brazilians as Marquinhos bends a left-footed shot just wide of the far post from the edge of the box. That's almost that.

A few more minutes for the Dominican team to withstand now. All things considered, both teams will probably be fairly content with this score now.
Some nice touches from Edson Azcona in the middle for the Dominican Republic, shimmying past a few Brazilian challenges.
He passes to Xardy Alvarez who has a shot from distance, the Dominican Republic's first effort of the game, but it's easily saved.
Another important clearance from Martes Delgado at the back for the Dominicans. After that nightmare spell, they will just want to get to the break now.
That quick-fire brace will have calmed the nerves of the Brazilian fans and the players too. Anything other than a win here would have been an absolute disaster.
Last time out they were 3-0 down to Italy at halftime; this week they go into the break in an altogether better situation.
Just realised why there are so many supporting the Dominican Republic here tonight.
They're Argentina fans, aren't they? Home nation supporters cheering on Brazil's opponents. Mystery solved.

Another one! This time it's Savio, who finds himself in space on the right. He tries to catch the impressive Valdez out by firing early to the near post, but the Domincan stopper is there once again!

How on earth was that not a goal?
More fluid attacking football from Brazil to set Leonardo through but his effort is blocked by Validez, and the ball bounces wide of the goal.
They have had very little of the ball so far, but the Dominican Republic's defence has done well to repel the countless Brazilian attacks. Martes Delgado in particular has looked very assured in the middle of defence.

A brilliant run from midfielder Marlon Gomez sees him sprinting through on the Dominican defence. He feeds Savio, who finds Guilherme Biro at the back post.
His header is well saved. It's another Brazil corner.

A brilliant left-footed delivery from Savio on the right curves towards the back post but just about evades everyone, going out for a goal kick. He is certainly the dangerman for Brazil so far.

Judging by the noise in the Estadio Malvina Argentinas most of the crowd hereare supporting the Dominican team, who are making their first appearance in this tournament.
The crowd are cheering for every pass as their team finally enjoy a brief spell of possession.
Twenty minutes gone, they will be very happy with this goalless start.
Forceful run down the right wing from the Dominican Republic's Israel Boatright, flying past Kaiki Bruno. He is muscled off the ball and his side are awarded a free kick, but Brazil quickly recover the ball and are back on the attack...

Another brilliant piece of attacking play from the Brazilians. Savio on the right this time, darting into the box and firing a firm shot at Xavier Valdez in the Dominican goal.
He saves well and pushes it out for a corner, with his team survive.
Brazilian midfielder Marlon Gomez twists and turns on the right side of the box and stands up a lofted ball to the back post. The defending Dominicans do enough to get the ball clear, but it's another decent opening for Ramon Menezes' team.
Brazil, who were criticised as being too passive in their first game against Italy, are really taking the game to Dominican Republic here. A spell of high pressing forces a wayward clearance from the Dominican defence and Brazil are back on the ball.

Another spectacular effort from Santos forward Marcos Leonardo, who connects with a bicycle kick from a corner. His effort was just off target but the young forward showed real skill to get that much power on the ball.

As expected, Brazil have taken control of the game from the very start and the Dominicans are looking to sit in and make things difficult.
We've already seen a few glimpses from right winger Savio, who came into the starting XI for today's game.

Dominican Republic look to cause an upset
This would go down as one of the most shocking results in U20 World Cup history if Dominican Republican can get something from today's game. But despite the disparity in reputation the performances from the two teams were fairly similar in the first games in Group D.
Both sets of teams are out
The Brazilian national anthem will be first up. Brazil's team, clad in green warm up jackets, came into the tournament as the favourites to lift the crown for a record-equalling sixth time.
The Dominican Republic, in stark contrast, are making their first appearance at the tournament.

After an opening match loss to Italy there is now no little room for mistakes. There's 20 minutes until kick off in the Estadio Malvinas, where Brazil will take on the Dominican Republic.

Little over half an hour to go until kick-off in the Estadio Malvinas for the Dominican Republic's second game at the U20 World Cup. Get they spring a surprise on the pre-tournament favourites?

Keep an eye out for Andrey Santos, who signed for Premier League side Chelsea in January, and Marcos Leonardo, the Santos striker. Both are highly-rated young prospects.

The Dominican Republic will look to prove a lot of pundits wrong when they take on a much-fancied Brazil side tonight. The Dominican national team will take on the pre-tournament favourites in their second fixture of the Under-20 World Cup, with kick off in an hour.
The tournament, hosted in rival nation Argentina, began in ignominious fashion for Brazil, suffering a 3-2 defeat to Italy. That result upset expectations in Group D and Brazil now face an uphill battle to top the group.
Could they compound Brazil's misery with a win?
Can Brazil get back to winning ways against the Dominican Republic?
Brazil are five-time winners of the U20 World Cup, most recently in 2011. Ramon Menezes’ men came into the tournament in good shape: unbeaten in 12 - a sequence that stretches back to November 2021 - and were crowned kings of South America at February’s CONMEBOL U20 Championship.
However they were undone by Italy in their opening game of this tournament, losing 3-2 to the European side. That result, coupled with Nigeria's win over Italy, means that Brazil can not afford a slip up against the Dominican team.
