After failing to make it past the group stage in the Leagues Cup, and returning home as one of the teams that failed to reach expectations, Santos Laguna must now turn their attention back to the Liga MX.

Midfielder, and one of the team’s key players, Juan Brunetta spoke about the club’s overall performance at the tournament and how they ended up eliminated in the first round.

We’re really hurt by what happened in the Leagues Cup, but now we want to move forward, improve and prepare well for the Liga MX. It’s important for us to have a good tournament which is now our objective, so we have to get up and put the Leagues Cup disappointment behind us. The team is very strong and wants to improve, we will work hard for when the domestic league resumes,” the Argentinean said.

Brunetta feels that the team struggled to adapt to the rhythm of the competition which partly explains the unusual way in which they were beaten in both games: “It was a strange tournament. We lost the first game on penalties, we lost the second game within the 90 minutes but due to small details that decided the match - it was difficult for us. Now’s the time for us to be self-critical both as a team and individually, and try to improve making the same mistakes in the future. We have to look forward, think about the Liga MX, and do the best we can. The fans deserve some happiness,” he continued.

To conclude, Brunetta summed up that the team must improve to face the remainder of the 2023 Apertura, and at least they will have the opportunity to vindicate both themselves and the fans: “We all need to remain positive and have faith - both from the club to us and from us to them, because we trust their idea and their project. We are training as hard as possible before the tournament resumes” (...)

This is a new opportunity for us to show that we are up to the task of competing with the best in the Liga MX. That’s what we are working towards. It will be important to start off well and fight for the top places in the tournament,” he ended.
