Jonathan Rodríguez’s days at América could be numbered. It is being reported that he has received an offer from an unnamed MLS franchise which he is studying. At the moment, everything indicate that the Uruguayan forward is keen on the idea of emigrating to the United States to continue his career and he could leave his club at a critical point of the Liga MX campaign.

MLS calling Cabecita

According to TUDN’s Gibrán Araige, Cabecita has received an attractive financial offer to play in Major League Soccer which he is seriously evaluating. “Cabecita Rodríguez wants to go to the MLS. He likes the offer, and besides that, he hasn’t been getting much playing time in the Jardine era. It’s been difficult for him not having a regular place in the starting XI. So in that sense, Cabecita views the offer very favorably,” the TUDN reporter explained.

América head coach André Jardine was asked about the player’s situation after the team’s 2-1 defeat to Pachuca last night. “We really want Jonathan to stay here because he is a very important player within our squad. He has been very decisive in big games but we will see how this develops. I believe that he is at the initial stage of negotiacions. I have spoken to Jonathan and he told me that he is very happy here but I imagine that there are a million things going through his mind right now”.

The transfer market in the MLS opened on 31 January and trading runs until 23 April. Considering the situation, the Azulcrema board is likely to look for a way for keep Jonathan Rodríguez at the club as they currently don’t have anyone who can replace him. The 30-year-old joined América on a $6 million deal from Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr in the summer of 2022. It was a return to Mexico for the player, who enjoyed successful spells with Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul, winning the title with both clubs.

During his two years at América, he has made 50 league appearances and scored a total of 20 goals. But playing time has proved much harder to come by in the current campaign. So far in the Clausura 2024, Cabecita has played just two games - the first half against Necaxa in Week 3 and appearing as a late sub in the 0-1 win against León. A grand total of 72 minutes on-field with no goals or assists.
