One of the top performers so far in the Leagues Cup, Carlos Vela, is set to miss his side’s game against Real Salt Lake after picking up an injury.

LAFC beat Juárez 7-1 in last week’s showing which was a torrid night for Mexican teams against their MLS counterparts, and Vela was the protagonist in his side’s thrashing, grabbing two goals and an assist.

The seven goals from LAFC set a new Leagues Cup record for most goals in a single game, however, Vela was taken off after sustaining a leg injury that will now see him miss his side’s match against Real Salt Lake in the Round of 16, which will be held at BMO Stadium.

LAFC hoped to count on an ageing Vela

There had been hopes that the Mexican forward would be fit in time for the game, but it seems that the condition of the right thigh of the player, which was heavily bandaged after the previous tie against Mexican opposition, has not improved as was hoped.

Vela, who said that his retirement is “coming soon”, will be a huge miss as his defensive work is highly valued by boss Steve Cherundolo, who appears to lack any natural replacement for the LAFC Player of the Month.

LAFC, if they progress, something which will be a much tougher task now they are without one of their star attackers, will play against either Monterrey or Tigres.
