Baresi backing Milan to beat Spurs

Franco Baresi believes that AC Milan are hitting the right form to go far in the Champions League after they were drawn to face Tottenham in the Last 16. Milan qualified from Group E as runners-up last week by hammering Salzburg 4-0, while Spurs won 1-2 away at Olympique Marseille to avoid an early exit.

Baresi told Sky Sport: "Milan will prepare in the best possible way and will be ready to amaze again. I think the team is ripe to go far. We respect Tottenham, they are special matches in the Champions League, but we have to think big. There is enthusiasm and the team is ripe for the knockout stages of the Champions League, last year's experience was important and now there is a conviction that we can play against anyone. Conte will be attentive to everything but Milan are up to it. We have a very strong midfield and a defence that is not afraid. Up front we create a lot and the fact it is essential that the players participate. San Siro will be of great help".

Two of football's historic sides. It will be an electric tie, fascinating for both sets of fans. We are the defending champions and we will be trying to defend our status while conscious of the team we will be up against. We're in for a passionate couple of games and we'll be doing everything we can to be back in the quarter final draw.

The first game isn't until February... Liverpool have won everything in the game, they have a stadium that gets right behind them and pushes the team a lot. They are a very difficult  rival, but we are Real Madrid. As I say, we're the defending champions. The return leg is at the Bernabéu with our fans support. We know what this game means, everyone in Europ knows too".

Emilio Butragueño, Director of Institutional Relations Real Madrid

Bayern reflect on tough PSG draw

Bayern Munich's pairing with PSG promises to be one of the most interesting clashes of the next round. Club CEO Oliver Kahn says that PSG is “the most difficult rival" that they could have drawn but added that the fans are in for two exciting matches. “We could not have been drawn against a tougher rival. But there is a positive side. We had the experience of Villarreal who many thought would be easy for us (but who eliminated the German champions last season),” Kahn told Sky.

As for who goes into the tie as favourites, Kahn said it's “50-50″ and a tough call to predict how it will turn out. “It's difficult to make a prediction, it's one of those ties which is 50-50. It will depend on small details, the form both teams are in when both legs are played. And there is also a World Cup between now and then. One thing's for sure, we'll see two great matches,” he concluded.

"You won't believe it but obviously, we want to win this competition (the Champions League) but our philosophy, what brings us a sense of calm and stability is winning the Premier League. I've always considered the Champions League a tournament that incredibly difficult to win - you have to treat it with a lot of respect and humility, because it can destroy sporting projects and we don't want our project to be destroyed. If we are strong and battling hard in the league, then we will always be among the candidates. But ties over two games... what are you going to tell me after what happened last season at the Bernabéu!"

Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City Director of Football

As you've already witnessed, the draw for the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League has thrown up some fabulous ties and one will pit two of the most important stars of the United States team, who will be teammates at the Qatar World Cup 2022, against each other. On one side, the Chelsea of Christian Pulisic and on the other side, Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund.

The duel means Pulisic’s return to Dortmund, the German city where he saw his own success story develop, but many also see Reyna as having the potential to be his successor in the team led by Gregg Berhalter.

Madrid nightmares

As Bolar reminds us, one may say that Klopp hates facing teams from Madrid in the Champions League.

That said, he has pretty spectacular memories of a victorious night in Madrid just three years ago. And this time around he'll feel that he's got something serious to prove.

With several of his key players getting a rest during the World Cup, and others expected to return from injury around Christmas, the second half of the season could be a very positive one for the Reds given how they've started it.

Klopp reacts to Champions League draw

Providing his reaction after the Champions League draw to Liverpoolfc.com, Jurgen Klopp said: “The first thing that we can say about this draw is it is proper Champions League. This is a tie that speaks for itself and one that we should all be excited about.

“I know we have played Real Madrid in a couple of recent finals but it is not so often that our two clubs have met in a two-legged tie so now we can look forward to this happening.

“Real’s European record is the best around. We know this. But we also know that ours is not too bad. On top of this, we know that we have Anfield and everyone knows what this means.

“It is a really good draw. A really exciting draw. The games themselves are still a few months away but it does not take a great deal of imagination to think what the atmosphere will be like at both games.

“There is a lot of football to be played before this, of course, so we will focus on each game as it comes but yes, this draw has given us something special to look forward to.”

Can teams from the same country face each other in last 16?

No side can face another team from the same national association.

Clubs cannot face opponents they met during the group stage, either. That led to the limitations we saw in the draw earlier, which are lifted from the quarter-final stage.
