Champions League groups A, B, C, D: Who has qualified for the round of 16?
Napoli, Porto, Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur go through to the Champions League round of 16 as group winners
At the end of the penultimate night of Champions League group stage action for 2022-23, we now know the identity of 14 of the 16 teams who have qualified for the knockout stages.
Let’s take a look at Tuesday’s results in Groups A, B, C and D and what they mean for the final group standings. Who’s through? Who’ll drop into the Europa League? Who’s out of Europe altogether?
Porto pip Club Brugge in Champions League group B; a dramatic night in group D
Group A
Rangers 1-3 Ajax
We knew before Tuesday’s matches kicked off that Napoli and Liverpool were going through, we just didn’t know in which order. Jürgen Klopp’s men had to defeat the Italians by four goals to top the group but came up a couple short.
Ajax defeated Rangers for the second time in the group and will play Europa League football in the New Year.
Group winners – Napoli
Qualified – Liverpool
Europa League – Ajax
Out – Rangers
Group B
Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Club Brugge
Porto 2-1 Atlético Madrid
Club Brugge and Porto had already qualified for the round of 16 before Tuesday’s fixtures. However, the Portuguese leapfrogged the Belgians by virtue of bettering their result on the final matchday.
The big news is that Atlético Madrid, favourites to win the group, are out of Europe altogether after a third defeat in six games.
Group winners – Porto
Qualified – Club Brugge
Europa League – Bayer Leverkusen
Out – Atlético Madrid
Group C
Bayern Munich 2-0 Inter
Tuesday’s results had absolutely no impact on the final group table, with everything already decided after matchday five.
Group winners – Bayern Munich
Qualified – Inter
Europa League – Barcelona
Out – Viktoria Plzeñ
Group D
Marseille 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Sporting Clube de Portugal 1-2 Eintracht Frankfurt
In sharp contrast to Group C, there was everything to play for on a dramatic final night in Group D. Leading 1-0 against Spurs at half-time, Marseille were going through as group winners but tumble out of Europe altogether after losing the game in France in injury time. Similarly, Sporting were in pole position to qualify after an hour of their match against Eintracht but drop into the Europa League after conceding twice in the final 30 minutes.
Group winners – Tottenham Hotspur
Qualified – Eintracht Frankfurt
Europa League – Sporting Clube de Portugal
Out – Marseille
