Return of Haaland
City striker Erling Haaland returns to Dortmund just 165 days after scoring the last of 86 goals he racked up in 89 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit.
The Norwegian scored a spectacular goal in his first appearance against his former club at the Etihad Stadium in September. Haaland’s acrobatic effort and a superb strike from distance by defender John Stones helped City come from behind to beat Dortmund 2-1.
Guardiola pre-match
“It’s a fantastic stadium everybody knows it. Atmosphere, attractive football they play. When I was here in Germany I played against [Jürgen] Klopp and [Thomas] Tuchel [when they were in charge of BVB] and always had difficult games. Fantastic atmosphere, happy to be back here,” Guardiola said ahead of the tie.
“I know in top games against Bayern, [Dortmund] play at a top level. We have a lot of respect for them. The first-half last time we were so sloppy, second half much better and we know we will have to behave and play our best to beat them. There’s no doubt about that.”
Terzić pre-match
“We have to improve on what we did in the first meeting and this time we have to go through to the last minute. City will play as well as they do against any team in the world,” Dortmund boss Edin Terzić said in his pre-match press conference.
Dortmund will progress to the round of 16 if they beat the reigning Premier League champions, if they draw and FC Copenhagen fail to beat Sevilla, or if Sevilla and Copenhagen draw.
