As was also the case in the round of 16, LaLiga clubs will dominate this week’s 2023/24 UEFA Champions League quarter-final draw. Spain has three clubs in the hat for the last eight, more than any other nation, after Atlético Madrid produced a dramatic fightback against Inter Milan to claim the last quarter-final berth on Wednesday. England and Germany both have two teams in the quarters, and France has one. For the third time in the past four years, no Italian sides have progressed beyond the last 16.

In addition to deciding who’ll be facing who in the next round of the knockout stages, Friday’s draw will also determine teams’ path through the semi-finals. What’s more, we’ll find out which potential last-four tie will provide the ‘home’ side in June’s final.

You can also join AS USA’s Joe Brennan for live-text coverage of the quarter-final, semi-final and final draw. Joe will be building up to the event from around 6am ET/3am PT, before talking you through every pairing as it is pulled out of the hat at UEFA HQ.

How will the quarter-final draw work?

Unlike the draws for the group stage and the round of 16, there will be no seedings or restrictions in the quarter-final draw. Clubs from the same national association can be pitted against one another, as can teams that faced each other at a previous stage of the 2023/24 Champions League.

All eight quarter-final sides will be placed in a single pot; in each tie, the first team drawn will be at home in the first leg.

How will the semi-final and final draws work?

In the semi-final draw, four balls will be placed in a pot. Each will contain a piece of paper bearing ‘winner of quarter-final 1′, ‘winner of quarter-final 2′, and so on. The four to-be-confirmed tie winners will then be drawn into two semi-final pairings, with the first ball pulled out of the hat in each case representing the home team in the first leg.

For the final draw, which UEFA says is “for administrative reasons”, two balls will be placed in a pot. The ‘home’ team at the showpiece event will be either ‘winner of semi-final 1′ or ‘winner of semi-final 2′, depending on which comes out of the hat first.
