Following Tuesday and Wednesday’s Champions League round-of-16 ties, we now know all of the eight teams qualified for the 2023-24 quarter-finals, with some familiar names still in the hunt for UEFA’s top club prize once again. The draw for the quarter-finals takes place on Friday 15 March at 6 a.m. ET.

Champions League 2023/24 Quarter-final line-up

Bayern Munich

PSG

Manchester City

Real Madrid

Barcelona

Arsenal

Borussia Dortmund

Atlético Madrid

Bayern and PSG first to reach the last eight

In the first of last week’s last 16 games, 2010, 2013 and 2020 winners Bayern Munich had little difficulty overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Lazio, with Harry Kane’s double in Germany leading the Bundesliga giants to a 3-1 aggregate triumph.

Also last Tuesday, Real Madrid target Kylian Mbappé stole the show in the second leg of Paris Saint-Germain’s tie against Real Sociedad, netting a brace in northern Spain as the 2020 runners-up completed a 4-1 win over the Basque side.

City make light work of Copenhagen, Madrid squeeze past Leipzig

Last Wednesday, both 14-time champions Madrid and 2023 winners Manchester City were expected to progress to the quarter-finals with little bother after winning away from home in the first leg. And so it proved for City, with Copenhagen no match for the favourites to win this year’s competition once again. Los Blancos, however, had a rather more nervy time of it, sneaking through by a solitary goal after a draw at the Bernabeú.

Barcelona impress, Arsenal squeeze past Porto

In the first of this week’s last-16 ties, Barcelona’s youngsters were the stars of the show as the Catalans reached the quarter-finals for the first time in four years by defeating Napoli 3-1 in Montjuïc after a draw in the first leg. Things were rather nervier for Premier League leaders Arsenal, however, who needed a penalty shootout to get past Porto after Leandro Trossard had scored the only goal at the Emirates.

Dortmund and Atleti through

Dortmund came into the second leg tied at one goal apiece after the first leg, but ran out fairly comfortable 2-0 winners to head into Friday’s draw. PSV will rue their missed chances, but Dortmund deserved to go through.

Atleti’s fans went through a roller-coaster of emotions as Simeone’s side beat Inter on penalties to book their place in Europe’s elite eight. Inter went 2-0 up on aggregate when Dimarco scored in the 35th minute, but Atleti got straight back up off the canvas and hit straight back, with Griezmann firing home from Koke’s assist. As the clock ran down and nerves filled the Metropolitano, it was Memphis Depay who kept his cool, turning beautifully in the box, again from a Koke assist, to beat the keeper at his far post and take the tie to extra-time. No goals in the additional half hour and in the penalty shoot-out Alexis and Lautaro missed for Inter and Atleti went through!
