Charly Rodríguez staying on at Cruz Azul
La Máquina announced the player's renewal on social media, although the exact timeframe was not disclosed.
Cruz Azul is still scrambling to finalize its roster ahead of the upcoming season. The club’s hopes of signing Serbian striker Luka Jovic fell through, and now defender Gonzalo Piovi may be on his way out. That leaves head coach Nicolás Larcamón in a tough spot, urgently searching for a replacement on the back line.
But amid the uncertainty, there’s a bright spot: midfielder Carlos Rodríguez is staying put.
Charly Rodríguez’s previous contract was due to expire in December
The club made the announcement Tuesday evening via its official social media channels, sharing a brief but confident message confirming that Rodríguez has signed a multi-year extension. That means “La Máquina” will continue to count on one of its most consistent and creative playmakers for seasons to come.
Through the first stretch of the 2025 Apertura, Rodríguez is making every minute count. Larcamón has given the 28-year-old a total of 394 minutes on the pitch across five matches—and Rodríguez has responded with three goals.
That means he’s finding the back of the net roughly every 131 minutes, a scoring rate that’s turning heads and lifting spirits among supporters. His sharp form and clutch performances have quickly cemented his role as a key contributor in Cruz Azul’s lineup.
Although Cruz Azul’s run in the 2025 Leagues Cup has come to an end, Charly left his mark in a dramatic showdown against MLS powerhouse LA Galaxy.
He scored the crucial equalizer that pushed the match into a nail-biting penalty shootout. In a back-and-forth battle from the spot, Cruz Azul ultimately edged out Galaxy with a 9–8 win in penalties. The victory was hard-fought, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
For now, Rodríguez isn’t going anywhere. Cruz Azul confirmed that the midfielder will remain without disclosing the exact length of his contract extension, although some sources report that the extension is four four years, taking him to 2029.
