Christian Pulisic will be sidelined for at least two months after suffering a knee injury in Chelsea’s defeat against Manchester City on 5 January. Blues boss Graham Potter initially thought that the United States international was only going to miss a couple of weeks, but after undergoing more medical examinations it was confirmed that he is set for an extended spell.

Christian is going to be out for a couple of months, we think. Hopefully less,” Potter said on Wednesday ahead of the Premier League game against Fulham.

Bad news for Pulisic

This injury comes at the worst time possible for Pulisic, because he was earning the trust of Potter and was being used as a regular starter across all competitions during the start of the second part of the season. Since arriving at Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund, the 24-year-old has suffered a string of injuries that have prevented him from establishing himself as a key player for the West Londoners.

The latest injury will leave Pulisic on the sidelines for the rest of the winter and this will prevent him from leaving Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window in search of more minutes. When he returns, he will have to fight for a spot in the starting lineup with João Félix, who arrived on a season-long loan from Atlético Madrid on Wednesday.

Pulisic will also miss the upcoming friendlies with the United States men’s national team against Serbia and Colombia. The American will also sit out Chelsea’s round of 16 clash against former club Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.
