Chelsea - Arsenal: how it happened

Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal

Stamford Bridge: match report

A 63rd-minute toe-poke on the goal line from Brazilian defender Gabriel earned Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and lifted them back to the top of the Premier League.

Gabriel, lurking at the far post, got on the end of a Bukayo Saka corner that flew past a line of Chelsea defenders.

Arsenal, pressing hard and moving the ball at pace, had the better of a highly-charged London derby but were profligate in front of goal, with Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Ben White missing chances against Graham Potter's side.

Chelsea's best efforts came on the counter-attack but they could produce only half-chances for Kai Havertz, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling. (Reuters)

'Toothless' CFC claims Winter

Arsenal deserved more claims English journalist Henry Winter as he reflects on the Stamford Bridge action.

Arsenal savour big derby win

The Arsenal squad and backroom staff celebrate the 0-1 over Chelsea with the travelling Arsenal fans at Stamford Bridge.

Arteta's men top the table

Arsenal now hold a two point gap at the Premier League summit and an enthralling battle is emerging between the North London side and Man City.

That was a big win for Arsenal and the Gunners now just have one Premier League game outstanding before the World Cup break as they welcome Wolves next weekend.

Man City are at home to Brentford.

The ref looks at the watch again.... second remain as the Arsenal fans sense major win is imminent....

The whistle sounds and it's a win for the Gunners.

One minute left for Arsenal to hang on and record a huge win over the Stamford Bridge team. More importantly, the win will see Arteta's men regain the lead in the Premier League.

A late Arsenal switch as Martinelli is replaced by Holding

A bit of a brawl breaks out between Xhaka and Chalobah as tempers fray in added time.

We'll have five minutes of added time.

Sterling carded as he clips Partey with the Ghanaian delivering a massive performance for the Gunners today.

It's been a solid performance from Arteta's man and will certainly convince any doubterts that the North London side are serious title contenders.

It's difficult to recall a moment when Chelsea really tested Arsenal keeper Ramsdale ... the CFC front line really have disappointed today and arsenal have always had the upper hand in the contest.

Elneny comes on for Odegaard

The rain relentless now as Arsenal look for a second that would seal maximum points.

Gallagher carded as he pulls Tierney's shirt

The Chelsea fans find their voice knowing that time is running out.

Arsenal poised to regain top spot in the Premier League table should the scoreline remain as it is.

Into the final ten minutes of action and Chelsea are now starting to ask a few more questions as the force Arsenal back.

Cucurella handles the ball and VAR will be consulted ...was it in the box?

Check is over and no penalty is the verdict.

Ben White yellow carded.

Zinchenko off with Tierney on for Arsenal

Pulisic and Kovacic on with Loftus-Cheek and Mount the players sacrificed.

Kovacic and Pulisic getting ready for the home side as Arsenal have Chelsea pegged back deep inside their own half.

Great play from Broja as he skips into the box but the pull back is met by a man in red. Arsenal immediately counter and Odegaard shoots over with just the keeper to beat.

The rain starting to fall again in West London and the goal seems to have taken the life out of the Stamford Bridge crowd.

Twenty minutes of the contest remain and there has been little or nothing by way of reply for the home side. Arsenal still dominating the game and Chelsea simply unable to find a way through.

Live Premier League table

The current live table makes good reading for Arsenal fans.

Saka appear on the Arsenal tweet but it was Gabriel who got the final touch from Saka's corner.

The Chelsea defence were poor on the goal as the ball simply drifted past a sea of blue shirts.

Broja and Gallagher on for CFC

Auba and Havertz making way

Arsenal take the lead... Gabriel with the final touch

Arsenal score as the ball drifts through a sea of players from Saka's corner.

Chelsea caught on the ball and Gabriel Jesus opts for the shot when squaring the ball may have been the better option.

Chalobah carded as he clips Jesus who was about to set off on goal.

Good news as the game resumes. Approaching the half hour mark and it remains goalless at Stamford Bridge.

The game is briefly held up as a medical situation has arisen in the goal being marshalled by Arsenal stopper Ramsdale as a fan needs treatment.

The draw would see Arsenal move level with City on 32 points but the Londoners would trail the Manchester side on goal difference.

The point would see Chelsea leap up one place in the table.

Three player on cards now: Auba and Azpilicueta for Chelsea and Saka for the visiting side.

The Spaniard certianly leading with his studs showing.

Chelsea almost get a break as Saliby mis cues and Auba manages to win a corner for his side.

Azpilicueta trips Martinelli and the Arsenal man seems to be in trouble.

The Cucurella v Saka battle has been one of the intriguing side events of this London derby as Saka drives in a corner and Auba clears (we've seen little from the Gabonese striker today).

Arsenal start the action...

All set at the Bridge with no changes for either team.

Jack Harlow watching the CFC game

The American rapper is at Stamford Bridge today and fingers crossed gets serves up with a little more excitement in the second 45'.

The game could certainly do with a goal as, despite the interesting tactical battle unfolding, we've seen little in goal mouth action.

The whistle sounds and it ends 0-0 at the interval.

Final minute of the half and the scoreline is a fair reflection of what we've seen on the Stamford Bridge pitch. Arsenal have edged things and it's only been that Gabriel Jesus chance that one could call a 'clear goal scoring' chance.

We'll have an additional minute of time added on.

Auba and Saka the players in Michael Olivers notebook.

Card for Saka as the England man fouls Cucurella after he felt that the Spaniard clipped him momenmts earlier

Final five minutes of the half and the game has gone somewhat flat now... The fans too have seemed to have lost their voices.

Chelsea seem to have cracked the Arsenal code with the home side looking far more comfortable with the passage of the game.

Thiago Silva heads over from a corner and appeals for a penalty with Thomas Partey apparently pushing the Brazilian.

Play on waves match official Oliver.

Havertz shoots after a fine ball from Sterling, easy for Ramsdale in the Arsenal goal.

Double foul as Odegaard and Saka are both fouled in the same passage of play.

Arsenal go close as Gabriel Jesus almost heads home.... 8 games without a goal from the Brazilian who too will be on his way to the Gulf.

It's always a heart in mouth time for England fans and indeed for fans of other nations as the World Cup looms in a fortnight... We say how Canada keeper Crepeau sustained a serious injury last night in the MLS Cup final and will miss the trip to Qatar.

Auba carded as he clips White ... first card all season for the Gabon international.

Free for Chelsea ...Xhaka clears the danger as Chelsea press now but as per most of the game it's the Arsenal fans who are making the bulk of the noise this afternoon.

Marc Cucurella feeling the cold today with the Spaniard the only player sporting gloves. It's fresh in West London but not that fresh!

Great work from Gabriel Jesus who looks to shoot and it's his compatriot Thiago Silva who produces an excellent block.

Neither keeper yet to be really tested as Arsenal revert to type with their short and neat passing game.

No shots on target from either side with Arsenal having 3 shots off target.

Arsenal edging the game in terms of possession....

Yellow cards
red cards
fouls won
fouls committed
Contested balls where possession is lost
Ball recoveries

Arsenal are getting decent mileage down their left hand side with Martinelli menacing the Chelsea defence.

An Arsenal win today would send the Gunners top of the table with a Chelsea win would fire the Blues up to 5th place.

It's been a bright and open start to the game with Arsenal slightly in top and Chelsea easing their way intio the contest.

Ben White shoots again and this time the defender goes closer with the ball dragged wide of Mendy's post.

Nice play from Chelsea as Havertz breaks into the box, a poor final ball from the German unravels the move but Graham Potter will be encouraged by that passage of play.

Ben White shoots but fails to get any accuracy on the effort as the ball flies high into the stand behind Mendy's goal.

Arsenal looking comfortable in these opening minutes and Chelsea struggling to deal with their quick and incisive play.

Poor from Saka as he opts for a short one and Cucurella was alert and intercepts. The former Brighton man redeeming his error.

Auba greeted with boos from the Arsenal fans upon each touch.

Cucurella barges into Saka and Arsenal win a dangerous free-kick despite the Spaniards protests.

A buzz around the ground as Michael Oliver gets the action underway as Chelsea kick-off ...

All set at the Bridge, Chelsea in their classic blue shirts, shorts and white socks. Arsenal today in their red and white shirts, white shorts and red socks.

We'll have a minutes silence pre-game to pay respect to those fallen in wars.

The players are in the tunnel with Cesar Azpilicueta and Odegaard bearing poppy wreaths.

The rain seems to have taken a break but it remains a damp and grey West London Sunday morning.

A reminder of the starting line-ups as kick-off looms.

Arsenal going through their pre-game drill wearing their rather smart Jamaica inspired training kit.

Less than 10 minutes ahead of kick-off now.

Today's games will be the penultimate for both Chelsea and Arsenal before the league breaks for the World Cup which gets underway in Qatar in two weeks.

Next weekend, Chelsea travel to Newcastle as Arsenal face struggling Wolves at the Emirates.

Both teams are involved in EFL midweek action as Chelsea face Man City at the Etihad and Arsenal welcome Brighton to North London.

A genuine Super Sunday

Today's London derby is the first of five big Premier League games today with the likes of Spurs, Man United, Newcastle and West Ham in action.

CFC looking to address Premier League form

Having been thumped 4-1 by manager Graham Potter’s former club Brighton last weekend, Chelsea head into in Sunday’s Premier League clash on a run of three top-flight games without a victory. That loss was preceded by draws against Manchester United and Brentford.

CFC-AFC last year

In the corresponding fixture last season at the West London ground, Arsenal ran out 2-4 winners as Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring before Timo Werner equalised, and further goals from Smith Rowe and Cesar Azpilicueta made it 2-2 at the break. However, Nketiah and a late Saka penalty secured victory.

Artsenal XI

Mikel Arteta confirms his 11 player for the Stamford Bridge clash and it's a return to the side for Ukraine international.

Potter names his side ahead of the derby with Sterling, Auba and Havertz lead the line for the Blues.

No place in the starting line-up for US star Pulisic two weeks ahead of the start of the 2022 World Cup.

Derby day across Europe

The Stamford Bridge clash is just one of four high profile derby clashes in major European leagues with Serie set to host the Rome derby between Roma and Lazio followed by the Derby D'Italia as Juve welcome Inter. The Seville derby between Real Betis and Sevilla rounds off the final of the four.

Chelsea-Arsenal: match official

Experienced referee Michael Oliver has been as assigned to officiate today's Stamford Bridge clash. The 37-year-old Northumberland native has been an official FIFA listed referee since 2012.

Approaching the hour mark ahead of kick-off with the teams expected to be confirmed within the next 10-15 minutes.

What we do know is that Takehiro Tomiyasu, Matt Turner and Emile Smith Rowe are expected to be ruled out for the Gunners through injury with Kepa, James and Fofana set to be sidelined for Chelsea along with the previously mentioned Chilwell.

Chelsea-Arsenal: matchday weather

It's a grey and wet Sunday morning in London with plenty of rain forecast for the next few hours with a current temperature of 13C-55F.

This is how the top of the Premier League table looks ahead of Sunday's games. The North London side are just a point behind leaders City as Chelsea lie in th place with 21 points.

Arteta on Chelsea

Speaking to the media ahead of the Stamford Bridge, Arsenal's manager Arteta claimed that Chelsea are: "really consistent, the results that they’ve had recently since Graham took over you can see what he’s trying to do and we will be ready and will start to prepare for the game from tonight.

"You can see that he has put his ideas in, like he did with Brighton. We need to play better than them, earn the right to win, and score one more goal than them."

 Graham Potter

"Recently, it hasn't gone so well (Potter)

Speaking ahead of the derby, Chelsea boss Potter stated:

"Recently, it hasn't gone so well," Potter said, with Chelsea having won only one of their last five league meetings with Arsenal.

"It's a London derby and anything can happen in the game. We want to be positive, play well and get the crowd involved in the game."

Potter added that goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is unlikely to feature for Chelsea before the World Cup, while midfielder Mateo Kovacic will be in contention for the Arsenal clash after returning to training on Friday.

Aubameyang 'excited' for Arsenal reunion

Chelsea's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is "excited" for his Arsenal reunion when the two clubs face off today in the London derby but manager Graham Potter wanted the narrative to steer away from the striker as his side seek a morale-boosting victory.

Aubameyang fell out with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta last season over disciplinary issues. He was first stripped of the captaincy and had his contract terminated ahead of a February move to Barcelona.

The Gabon international, 33, scored 92 times in more than 150 appearances for Arsenal and returned to the Premier League in September, crossing the London divide to sign for Chelsea where he has scored three times in 11 games so far.

"The history makes it an interesting one for Auba. But the past is the past as far as we're concerned," Potter told reporters on Friday. "I don't think we should make it about him.

"He is an important part of the team for us but it takes everybody, not just one person. I understand the interest around him because it's Arsenal. I think he's looking forward to the game, excited for it."

Chelsea earned a much-needed victory in the Champions League in midweek after a slump in their domestic form, having floundered against Brentford and Manchester United and endured a 4-1 humiliation at Potter's old club Brighton & Hove Albion.

Chilwell absence

Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell will miss the 2022 World Cup with England due to a “significant” hamstring injury. Chilwell suffered the injury in Chelsea’s 2-1 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday in what is a major blow for Gareth Southgate.

The England international confirmed the news on his social media channels on Saturday: “Following my ACL injury I worked so hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup. It has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, this won’t be possible following my scan results. I’ll do all I can to get back playing for Chelsea ASAP. Thanks for the messages of support.”

Possible Chelsea XI vs Arsenal:

This is the possible CFC XI for today's clash against Arsenal

Mendy; Chalobah, Silva, Koulibaly; Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, Cucurella; Mount, Aubameyang, Sterling.

Chelsea have only managed one win against the Gunners in their past six meetings in all competitions with Mikel Arteta's men hoping that the this vein of consistency against the 'Blues' is maintained with a win enough to propel Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League table.

A draw would keep Arsenal in second place with Man City holding a superior goal difference.

The action in West London gets underway at 12:00 local time, which is 8:00am ET, 5:00am PT

Hello and welcome to our live Premier League coverage as seventh placed Chelsea welcome Arsenal who are looking to regain top space in the table.
