Chelsea confirm Xabi Alonso arrival: every BlueCo manager and how long they lasted

Xabi Alonso begins his Premier League return at Stamford Bridge after leaving Real Madrid, taking over a club still searching for stability.

Chelsea have a new head coach. Again. This time, it is Xabi Alonso.

The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager is heading to London for the next chapter of his coaching career. More specifically, west London. As first reported by AS, the Spanish tactician is now officially a Blue. His return to the Premier League brings him back to a familiar stage, where he will once again cross paths with managers like Mikel Arteta and Michael Carrick from the sidelines. This time, though, Stamford Bridge will be home, not Anfield.

How long is Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea contract?

For months, Alonso’s name had been strongly linked with Liverpool, especially amid questions over Arne Slot’s difficult run-in. A return to Anfield always seemed like a natural storyline.

Instead, the reigning world champions, in reference to Chelsea’s recent Club World Cup success, have won the race for his signature. It is a bold move, and one that brings the 44-year-old former midfielder back into the Premier League spotlight after leaving the Santiago Bernabeu just four months ago.

Alonso has signed a four-year contract, keeping him at Chelsea through 2030.

Chelsea still searching for stability

Chelsea’s season has been anything but stable. The club sits ninth in the Premier League table with two matches remaining and, after losing the FA Cup final to Manchester City 1-0, they have no guaranteed place in European competition next season.

In fact, the team is facing the possibility of missing out on all continental tournaments.

The coaching turnover has only added to the turbulence. Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year’s Day triggered another collapse in a project that has struggled for consistency. Despite winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup the previous season, Chelsea’s momentum quickly faded.

Liam Rosenior’s short-lived spell, which ended just three and a half months into a contract running until 2032, added to the sense of instability at Stamford Bridge. Now Chelsea are ninth, and coming off a run of seven league games without a win, including six defeats.

BlueCo turns to Alonso

Fan frustration has grown louder. On the way to Wembley for the FA Cup final, supporters displayed a banner reading: “BlueCo Out! We want our Chelsea back.”

Club ownership, BlueCo, has now turned to Alonso in an effort to steady the project. Other candidates considered included Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner, Marco Silva and Filipe Luis.

Alonso’s brief and difficult spell at Real Madrid has not diminished his reputation in English football. His stock remains high after leading Bayer Leverkusen to a Bundesliga title in dominant fashion.

A new role beyond tactics

At Chelsea, Alonso is expected to operate as a manager in the traditional Premier League sense, not just a head coach. That means his influence will extend beyond tactics and training sessions into broader sporting decisions.

Club leaders believe that his appointment could also play a role in retaining key players such as Enzo Fernández, Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Marc Cucurella, regardless of whether Chelsea qualify for Europe.

The message is clear. This is a reset.

A shift in strategy at Stamford Bridge

Since BlueCo’s arrival, Chelsea have spent more than €1.7 billion (almost $2 billion) on transfers. Now, there is a growing belief inside the club that the squad needs more experience and fewer developmental projects.

The aim is to stop the revolving door of managers that has already seen Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior come and go.

Alonso arrives with a mandate to bring structure, authority and long-term stability.

A Premier League summer already moving

The 2026 summer was already expected to bring major movement among top managers across Europe, but Chelsea have moved early to secure Alonso.

The idea is to give him a full summer to implement his philosophy and reshape the squad before the new season begins.

Now, the question is whether the gamble pays off.

Alonso faced Chelsea 20 times as a player. From this summer onward, he will be expected to define what it means to be a Blue, and to make Stamford Bridge feel like home.
