The Liam Rosenior era at Stamford Bridge has been short, turbulent and full of heartache since taking over in January. He walked into a team that was in turmoil and inherited more than a few loose ends to tie up while picking up a few more on the way.

Building Blues character a priority

Chelsea have an FA Cup title still in the cards, with a quarterfinal match coming against Port Vale Saturday afternoon and are currently in a chase for the top four in the Premier League. While the new Blues manager has plenty on his plate at the moment, that hasn´t stopped him from looking towards the future.

Rosenior talked about what the Blues need to make this squad one that can compete for every title in the coming years. He talked about maturity, leadership and consistency being one of the key characteristics of the players they chase this summer. “Bringing players with emotional stability, bringing good characters in, who in difficult moments can understand what it takes to win in those difficult moments,” said the Chelsea manager.

Whether it’s coincidence or not, this discourse comes right around the same time that he chose to suspend midfielder Enzo Fernandez for his comments on a potential summer exit to Real Madrid. During the International break, one of Rosenior’s key pieces in the middle of the park talked about the a potential move to the Spanish capital, saying “I’d like to live in Madrid one day, it reminds me of Buenos Aires.”

Big changes coming in summer?

That led to a two match suspension that will start against Port Vale in Saturday’s FA Cup match, and will carry over to a crucial league battle against Manchester City. While the Argentinian will miss the next couple matches, the Chelsea boss did say he would keep his vice captaincy once he returns to the pitch.

For a long time Chelsea have been invested in finding young talent, and developing them within the system to either groom to be first team members, or to sell in the transfer markets. Players like Enzo and Cole Palmer were key parts of signing strategy. There are reports that both Palmer and Enzo could be on the way out of Stamford Bridge this summer, especially if the Blues fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Now the system seems to be changing under the new Rosenior regime, and the board is buying in to the new method. “We’ve had great conversations with the ownership and support directors about what we do in the summer. And we’ve also had conversations with certain players in the group as well, who are really, really happy with the direction that we’re going to go in.”
